Revs Drop Sloppy Opener In Lancaster

August 25, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution dropped the opening game of their crucial series in Lancaster, 10-3 to the Barnstormers on Monday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The loss puts the Revs 4.5 games back of Lancaster in the Freedom Division second half race, while clinching the season victory for Lancaster in the War of the Roses series. York will look to rebound with two games remaining in the head-to-head series the next two nights.

York jumped in front in the top of the fourth inning. Andres Perez broke a scoreless deadlock with an opposite field solo homer to right, his 12th of the season. Bryan Pounds followed by reaching on an error and scored as James Simmons drilled a two-out RBI double to the gap in left-center for a 2-0 lead.

The Barnstormers answered in their half of the inning. Revs starter Logan Williamson cruised through the first 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit, but a two-out error by Pounds on a grounder to third kept things alive as Mike McDade reached. Brian Cavazos-Galvez then walked, and Lance Zawadski doubled the other way to get Lancaster on the board at 2-1.

Lancaster rallied with two outs and no runners for the second straight inning in the bottom of the fifth. Seemingly in control after erasing Charlie Cutler's leadoff single with a double play grounder off the bat of Yusuke Kajimoto, Williamson ran into two-out trouble as Jerry Owens and Derrick Pyles singled, with Pyles ripping one just behind second baseman Eric Patterson at his normal position, having broken up the middle to cover second. Kent Matthes followed with a two-run double down the left field line, giving Lancaster a 3-2 lead. Another run scored when first baseman Telvin Nash was charged with an error on a missed popup by McDade. A second consecutive error occurred when Wilson Valdez mishandled a ground ball by Cavazos-Galvez, before Zawadski walked to load the bases and Luke Hughes walked to force in a run, giving the hosts a 5-2 advantage.

Pounds led off the sixth with an opposite field home run to right, his 11th of the year, bringing the Revs back within 5-3.

York had a chance to draw closer in the seventh inning with a runner at third and one out, but on a play that the Revs disputed was fouled off hitter Brandon Boggs' foot, no foul was called and Valdez was caught in a rundown between third and home before third baseman Hughes ran across the field to step on first, finishing a head-scratching inning-ending double play.

It was a big turning point as Lancaster scored an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on Zawadski's second RBI double of the night, yanked into the right field corner.

The Barnstormers put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, scoring on RBI singles by McDade, Cavazos-Galvez, and Hughes, along with a sac fly by Zawadski who picked up his third RBI of the night.

Lancaster starter Nate Reed (5-7) earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) over 5.1 innings. Williamson (7-10) suffered the loss, also allowing just two earned runs in 5.1 innings but charged with five total runs.

Notes: The game began after a 20 minute rain delay and was played through heavy rain briefly in the fourth inning. Perez added to his league-leading RBI total with his fourth inning home run, now with 68 RBI on the season. Lancaster wins the Community Cup for the first time since the 2012 season, improving to 15-11 in the season series. York had won the season series outright in back-to-back years the previous two seasons, becoming the first team to do so in War of the Roses series play. York has lost 13 of the last 17 meetings after winning seven of the first nine. Lancaster's 4.5-game division lead is their largest of the second half. York righty Matt Neil (2-7, 4.51) faces Lancaster right-hander Chad Beck (3-2, 4.68) in Tuesday's contest at 7 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:40 p.m. with Darrell Henry and Ray Jensen on the call.
