Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgeport, Ct- August 25, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (24-21, 50-65) defeated the Long Island Ducks (24-21, 70-45) 6-2 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday night. The Bluefish have now taken the first two of the three-game series and have moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Second Half of the Liberty Division Standings with Long Island and the Somerset Patriots.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Cory Riordan (4-3) earned the win with eight productive innings, giving up two runs on 12 hits, walking one, striking out four, and surrendering one home run. The Connecticut native registered his seventh quality start of the season, second best on the pitching staff, and was helped out by his defense as the Bluefish turned three double plays behind him, giving them six twin-killings thus far in the series. Long Island Starting Pitcher Bruce Kern (7-4) suffered the loss, lasting six innings, allowing five runs (four earned runs) on ten hits, walking one while striking out six and throwing a wild pitch.

Bridgeport took the early 1-0 lead off Kern in the home half of the first on a run-scoring single by Welington Dotel, plating Bryan Sabatella with the game's first run after he lead off the frame with a double, extending his on-base streak to 18 consecutive games. Dotel drove home his team-leading 58th run of the season in the process. The 'Fish added to the lead with three more runs in the second and a 4-0 cushion. Jeudy Valdez was hit by a pitch thrown by Kern to open up the inning, and he would later score along with Matt Wessinger on a two-out, two-run triple off the bat of Sabatella, who later would cross the plate on the first of two fielding miscues in the game by Ducks shortstop Dan Lyons. Long Island has now committed five errors in the series.

Long Island scored their first run of the night in the fourth on a solo homer by Mike Blanke off Riordan to cut the deficit to 4-1, but the Bluefish would regain a four-run edge in the fifth on an RBI single by Jobduan Morales, scoring Dotel, who doubled to lead off the inning, and the lead was extended to 5-1. Blanke's second RBI of the night made it 5-2 in favor of Bridgeport, but the 'Fish added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Andres Rodriguez drove home Sabatella with a base knock to make it 6-2 and that score held up as the home team won their third consecutive game overall and fifth straight against their cross-sound rival at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Sabatella led the offensive attack for the Bluefish with four hits (two singles, a double, and a triple), two runs batted in, three runs scored, and his 30th stolen base.

Bridgeport concludes their series with the Long Island Ducks at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Wednesday, August 26th as the 2015 Ferry Cup Series resumes. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a James O'Rourke Bobblehead, courtesy of YP.
