The York Revolution took part in an exciting back-and-forth affair with the Sugar Land Skeeters on Tuesday night, but wound up on the wrong end of the score, falling 9-6 at Santander Stadium.
Atlantic League All-Star Logan Williamson (3-6) got the start for the Revs, but had a rough outing, allowing five earned runs and 10 hits in just 4.1 innings of work.
Travis Scott opened up the scoring in the first with a single to right to score Denny Almonte and came right back in the third to touch up Williamson again with an RBI double. Chris Wallace followed right after with a three-run home run to right-center to push the lead to 5-0 in just the third inning.
The Revs got on the board in the fourth as Brandon Boggs banged a single to left, plating Eric Patterson who scored when left fielder Johan Limonta fumbled the ball for an error. Bryan Pounds followed that up with a ground rule double to right-center scoring Boggs, which narrowed the deficit to 5-2.
The conclusion of the inning closed the book on Skeeters starter Tim Stauffer, who made his Atlantic League debut, going four innings and only giving up one earned run. The big league veteran retired the first 11 batters he faced.
Andres Perez got another run back for the Revs in the fifth, blasting his fourth dinger of the year off of reliever Dan Meadows, slicing the Skeeters lead to just two going into the sixth.
Yeicok Calderon came up clutch in the sixth, smashing a single back up the middle to score Boggs and making it a one run game.
That score held until the eighth inning, when Limonta smoked a two-run single up the middle off of Revs reliever Stephen Penney to give the Skeeters some breathing room at 7-4.
The Revs would take advantage of a Skeeters miscue in the eighth to get those runs back. With two runners on, Calderon hit a one-hopper to first which Delwyn Young snagged, but he threw wide to second and the ball skipped into left field, allowing two runs to score. The Revs looked poised to break the game open and take the lead as Luis De La Cruz came to bat following an intentional walk to Perez to load the bases with only one out, but reliever Derrick Loop induced a weak ground ball back to the mound, which set in motion a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.
With the game still within reach in the ninth, Skeeters center fielder Denny Almonte smashed a home run to left off of Revs closer Josh Judy to give Sugar Land a three run lead which would ultimately hold up as Loop converted a five-out save, his sixth of the year.
The Revs look to try and take game three on Wednesday and keep alive a chance for a series split, as Matt Neil (2-6, 4.73) takes the hill for the Revs and will be opposed by Sugar Land starter Josh Geer (3-2, 2.77) on Jurassic Park Night, featuring a live animatronic dinosaur that will be roaming Santander Stadium. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
Notes: Perez' home run over the Arch Nemesis in the fifth was the 40th of his Revs career, becoming the fifth player in club history to reach that mark. Perez also moved past James Shanks for second in club history in total bases (598), just seven shy of matching Scott Grimes' club record. Perez now has 381 hits in his Revs career, two shy of tying Shanks' franchise mark. Leadoff man Mikey Reynolds reached twice on an error and stole a base, but saw his 22-game official on-base streak come to an end. Reynolds also lost a six-game hitting streak. The top three in the Revs lineup were held hitless in 14 at-bats on the night. Cleanup hitter Brandon Boggs went 2-for-4 with a walk and scored three times, tying a Revs season-high for the first time since Boggs scored three runs on May 14 at Camden. Williamson allowed more than one earned run for just the fourth time in 13 starts and more than two earned runs for just the third time in 13 starts. Williamson had previously allowed just one earned run in 29.0 innings over his last four home starts and just two earned runs in 19.2 innings for the season against the Skeeters.
