Offense Stifled In Loss To Ducks

Lancaster Stormers News Release

Newly signed Darin Downs got the start for the Long Island Ducks on Tuesday night and did well, but it was reliever Bruce Kern that completely shut off the Lancaster Barnstormers offense.

Together, they combined to limit the Barnstormers to two singles in a 5-0 Long Island victory at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Long Island improved to 3-2 in the second half of the season while the Barnstormers dropped to 3-3.

The Ducks struck in the first inning as Reegie Corona singled to right, stole second and came home when Randy Ruiz clubbed a double into the left field corner with two outs in the inning.

Lancaster came close to scoring in the home half of the inning when Zach Collier picked up a one-out walk and stole second. One out later, Mike McDade smashed a single through the left side. Utility player Blake Davis, making the start in left field, scooped up the base hit and gunned down Collier on a close play at the plate.

The Barnstormers never came anywhere near scoring again. Downs yielded one more walk, to Brian Cavazos-Galvez in the third. Kern (5-1) took the mound in the fourth inning and surrendered a single to Collier in the sixth and walk to McDade in the seventh. He faced only one batter over the minimum in his six innings of work. The right-hander struck out three.

Shunsuke Watanabe (4-3) kept the deficit at one run until the seventh when Jon Griffin banged a leadoff single into center and scored quickly on Mike Blanke's double into the left field corner. Dan Lyons doubled to right following a fly ball out from Davis to give the Ducks a 3-0 edge.

Bryan Sabatella closed the scoring with a two-out, two-run single in the ninth after an error extended the inning.

The series continues on Wednesday evening. Joe Gardner (3-1) gets the start for the Barnstormers against right-hander John Brownell (6-2). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: The game was the ninth time this season that the Barnstormers have been shut out, tying the record set each of the last two seasons...The two hits tied a season low...Cavazos-Galvez batted leadoff with Jerry Owens ailing...Watanabe threw his seventh quality start, giving up six hits and three runs in seven innings...Kern retired 10 batters on ground balls.
