Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
YORK, Pa. - The Sugar Land Skeeters pounded out 16 hits for nine runs, including two round-trippers in a 9-6 shootout with the York Revolution. Sugar Land improves to 39-37 overall and 3-3 in the second half of the season following the victory.
With a pair of RBI early in the contest, Travis Scott took over sole-possession of the all-time Skeeters record for runs driven in, passing Dominic Ramos. The catcher/first baseman has driven in 132 in three years with Sugar Land.
Sugar Land jumped on York starter, Logan Williamson early to surge out to a quick lead. Denny Almonte ripped a one-out single to left in the top of the first and advanced to second on a groundout from Delwyn Young. Scott tied the career-record for RBI in Sugar Land history with a single into right, staking the Skeeters to a 1-0 lead.
The Skeeters exploded for four runs in the top of the third to roar ahead to a 5-0 lead. Kevin Russo singled to open the frame and Young followed with a single to left. Scott blasted a double to right to take sole possession of the RBI record, moving ahead of Dominic Ramos with 132 RBI in a Skeeters jersey. Chris Wallace rifled his second home run in as many days with a three run blast, staking Sugar Land to a 5-0 lead.
York rallied for two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth to chip into the lead. After Tim Stauffer retired the first nine batters of the game, the new Skeeter ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth. With two quick outs in the frame, Eric Patterson drew a walk to extend the inning. Brandon Boggs singled to left, but an error by Johan Limonta allowed a run to score. Bryan Pounds hit a ground-rule double, bringing in another run and cutting the Skeeters' lead to 5-2.
Dan Meadows entered in the bottom of the fifth and surrendered a solo home run to Andres Perez, narrowing the lead to 5-3.
The Revolution cut the Sugar Land lead to one with a run in the bottom of the sixth. James Parr surrendered a one-out walk that came in to score on a Yeicok Calderon single up the middle.
Johan Limonta gave the Skeeters some breathing room in the top of the eighth, picking up a two-out RBI single against his former team. Following a Russo single and stolen base to open the frame, Young was issued an intentional walk with one out and Wallace was plunked on a 0-2 offering to load the bases with two outs. Limonta picked up a two-RBI single, inflating the lead to 7-4. With the single by Limonta, every starting player for Sugar Land picked up a hit in the contest.
York responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to close the gap to one-run, 7-6. Andrew Johnston gave up back-to-back one out singles and committed a balk to move both runners to scoring position. The right-hander walked Nick Ferdinand to load the bases and giving the ball to Derrick Loop to quell the rebellion. Loop induced a ground ball to first, but Young made an erratic throw to second in an attempt to turn the double play that allowed two runs to come home. Loop recovered from the defensive miscue and turned a 1-2-3 double play to keep the lead intact.
A two-run home run in the top of the ninth off the bat of Denny Almonte again gave the Skeeters a three-run cushion, moving Sugar Land ahead, 9-6. Loop kept the Revolution off the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth to secure his sixth save of the season.
