Revs Battle Back, Edged in Extras by Blue Crabs

(Waldorf, Md.) - Down to their final out, the York Revolution completed a comeback on Josh Wilson's game-tying ninth inning single, but it was the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs who walked off with a 6-5 win on Bryant Nelson's tenth inning single on Sunday afternoon at Regency Furniture Stadium. The first-place Revs (36-27) settle for the four-game split, with their magic number remaining at five through Sunday's game with seven remaining in the first half. Sugar Land and Lancaster, both chasing York in the standings, are in action later in the day on Sunday. The Revs' season-long eight-game road trip continues to Long Island on Monday night.
The Revs jumped ahead with two runs in the second inning. Michael Burgess reached third as right fielder Ryan Kilmon, making his pro debut, dropped a fly ball at the wall. Burgess trotted home on Michael Rockett's triple to right field, and Kevin Rivers followed with a bloop RBI double to center, spotting York a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Crabs took advantage of a pair of their own bloop hits to draw even in the bottom half of the second. Angel Flores blooped a single to start things, and Kuan-Jen Chen followed with a single up the middle. Jon Dziomba sacrificed both runners ahead, and Eric Garcia slapped a single through the right side to plate the first run. A two-out bloop single to right by D'Arby Myers brought home the second run, tying things at 2-2.
Flores connected on a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the third to put Southern Maryland ahead, and Kilmon redeemed himself with a two-out RBI double off the base of the left field fence for his first pro hit, as the Crabs extended their lead to 5-2.
The Revs inched back, eventually drawing even on runs in the fifth, seventh, and ninth innings.
Rivers and Wilson singled to begin the fifth, advancing on a sac bunt by Salvador Paniagua. Travis Witherspoon then picked up an RBI on a ground out to third, bringing York within 5-3.
Wilson reached on another three-base error by Kilmon on a fly ball near the right field corner in the top of the seventh, and came home on Paniagua's ground out to second, making it a one-run game.
Burgess slapped a single to left-center to greet closer Cody Eppley to start the ninth, and moved ahead on Rockett's sacrifice bunt. Burgess advanced to third on a groundout by Rivers and scored as Wilson jumped on the first pitch, lining a game-tying single to right to deadlock things at 5-5.
York's bullpen was airtight from the third inning-on. Matt Neil logged 4.1 shutout innings, while Jose Arredondo and Scott Rice each tossed scoreless frames to move the game to extras.
The Revs were unable to take advantage of infield singles by Paniagua and Andres Perez in the tenth inning, stranding a pair of runners.
Norberto Susini worked a one-out walk in the bottom of the tenth and advanced to second on a groundout by Myers. That set the stage for Nelson, who lined the game-winning single to right with two outs, as Susini was ruled to have barely eluded Paniagua's tag on a strong throw from Rivers in right field with the decisive run.
Ricardo Gomez (0-1) suffered the loss, charged with just his third earned run all season. It ended a Revs' season-best 16-appearance scoreless streak for Gomez, who allowed his first run since May 13 and first earned run since May 11.
Ian Marshall (1-0) picked up the win for Southern Maryland with the scoreless tenth.
The Blue Crabs out-hit York 17-8, winning despite stranding 12 runners. It marked the highest hit total in a game against the Revs this season.
Notes: York falls to 4-2 in extra innings. The Revs have played three of their six extra-inning games at Southern Maryland (2-1). York had played just one extra-inning game since May 7 prior to this series, as two of the four games on the weekend went more than nine innings. Witherspoon's nine-game hitting streak to begin his Revs career was snapped. York lefty Frank Gailey (2-0, 1.80) will face Long Island's John Brownell (4-3, 3.01) in Monday's opener in Central Islip, NY.
