New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - One year after becoming the first Major League Soccer team to be crowned SuperLiga champion, the New England Revolution will begin defense of its title against Mexican Primera División club Santos Laguna at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, at Gillette Stadium in the SuperLiga 2009 Group B opener for both teams. The game will be televised nationally in Spanish on Telefutura, while streaming video of the match will be available in English on superliga2009.com. ESPN Deportes Radio will carry the game nationally in Spanish, while local listeners can tune into the WEEI Radio Network for English audio.
New England (4-4-4, 16 pts.) currently occupies sixth place in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer, while Santos Laguna finished the recent 2009 Clausura season with a record of 5-5-7 (22 pts.) en route to a fifth-place finish in its group.
Although the clubs compete in different leagues, they will be familiar opponents when they match up on Sunday night. The Revolution and Santos met less than one year ago in the group stage of SuperLiga 2008 at Gillette Stadium, with New England earning a 1-0 victory behind Kheli Dube's second-half goal. The Revs went on to win the group - and the entire competition - while Santos finished last and didn't qualify for the knockout round.
