York Revolution News Release
(York, PA) - On the day the franchise embarks on its 10th anniversary season, the York Revolution have made a splash, signing Major League veteran Micah Owings to a contract. Owings will be inactive for tonight's season opener, but joins the team on its season-opening trip to New Britain, CT. The signing was announced by Revolution manager Mark Mason.
One of the most accomplished hitting pitchers of all-time, Owings has enjoyed tremendous success both on the mound and at the plate at the big league level.
A third-round draft pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005, Owings made his major league debut just two seasons later, going 8-8 with a 4.30 ERA in 29 games (27 starts) for the National League West champions. His rookie season included a four-game winning streak in May and June, a pair of complete games including a two-hit shutout against the San Francisco Giants on September 18, and National League Silver Slugger honors as the right-hander batted .333 with four homers at the dish.
Owings made history on August 18, 2007, at Turner Field, earning the win on the mound while going 4-for-5 with two homers, a double, six RBI, and four runs scored in a 12-6 Diamondbacks win over the Braves. His RBI were the most by a pitcher since 2002, while his hits and runs totals were the most in a game by a pitcher since 1988. Of Revolution historical note, Owings became the first Diamondback with four hits, four runs, two homers, and six RBI in a game since Shea Hillenbrand in 2003; Hillenbrand played for the Revolution during the 2008 season.
Owings won six more games for Arizona in 2008, including a season-opening four-game winning streak before being dealt to the Cincinnati Reds that September as part of a deal for Adam Dunn. He won seven games for the Reds in 2009 before moving to the bullpen in 2010.
Owings re-signed with Arizona for the 2011 season and went 8-0 with a 3.57 ERA in 33 games (four starts) helping the Diamondbacks claim another division title. He also earned a win in Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers with his team facing elimination.
Owings appeared in six games for San Diego during an injury-shortened 2012 campaign and split time in the Nationals and Brewers organizations during the 2013 season. It was at that time that the Gainesville, GA native transitioned to batting, as he hit .324 for the Nationals in spring training, and posted a .785 OPS at Triple-A Syracuse as an outfielder/designated hitter. Owings also appeared in the Marlins organization in 2014.
"Micah brings a lot of experience to our club as both a pitcher and hitter," stated Mason. "His main focus will be to pitch, but we will not rule out using him to hit as well."
On the mound, the 33-year-old is 32-33 with a 4.86 ERA in 138 Major League outings (68 starts), to go with a 23-5 minor league record and a 3.23 career ERA. At the plate, Owings has batted a combined .283 with nine home runs in the big leagues and .274 with 10 round-trippers in the minors.
Prior to turning pro, Owings was a teammate of former Revs Eric Patterson and Brandon Boggs at Georgia Tech, where he was ACC Rookie of the Year in 2003. Owings transferred to Tulane for his junior season and, as 2005 Conference USA Player of the Year, helped lead the Green Wave to the College World Series. Owings also holds Georgia's state high school home run record with 69 long balls, one short of the national record.
The Revolution open the 2016 season tonight at New Britain against the expansion Bees. Fans can listen to the action live beginning at 6:15 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 WOYK, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK app.
After a season-opening seven-game road trip, the Revs open the home schedule on Thursday, April 28, against the Sugar Land Skeeters at PeoplesBank Park. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
