Revs Spoil Inaugural Game In New Britain, Winning 2016 Season Opener

April 21, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution did all of their run scoring on ground balls in the infield, and six pitchers combined to hold onto an early lead in a 4-3 Opening Night victory over the New Britain Bees on Thursday evening, in front of 4,617 fans at New Britain Stadium for the expansion Bees' inaugural game.

York leadoff man Jason Repko set the tone immediately, legging out a hustle double on a line drive to left that glanced off the glove of Greg Golson on a diving effort. After recording extra bases on the fourth pitch of the season, Repko raced to third ahead of a throw on Josh Wilson's bloop hit to right, and went on contact to score on a double play grounder back to the mound off the bat of Andres Perez for a quick 1-0 lead.

Revs starter Mike McClendon worked out of first inning trouble, striking out cleanup hitter Kevin Rivers and Jovan Rosa back-to-back, stranding two in scoring position and kicking off a stretch of eight consecutive batters retired.

The Revs added to their lead in the fourth, again using small ball to do so. Bryan Pounds reached base on an infield hit to lead things off, and James Simmons reached safely when starting pitcher Josh Outman's throw to second on a comebacker pulled shortstop Brandon Chaves off the bag for an error. A walk to Salvador Paniagua loaded the bases, setting things up with one out for Repko who hustled out an attempted double play turn, picking up an RBI on the fielder's choice for a 2-0 lead.

Rosa slashed an RBI triple down the right field line for New Britain's first run as a franchise in the bottom of the fourth, but McClendon struck out Jonathan Roof to leave runners at the corners, keeping York in front.

The Revs recouped that run in the fifth, loading the bases on a pair of walks to Perez and Telvin Nash and an infield hit by Joel Guzman. That preceded an RBI fielder's choice grounder from Simmons as the lead grew to 3-1.

York reliever Kelvin De La Cruz (1-0) escaped trouble in the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back leadoff bunt singles by James Skelton and Jon Jones, striking out Golson and Rivers to squelch that threat. The lefty also worked a scoreless sixth to pick up the season-opening win.

After a scoreless seventh from Ty'Relle Harris, the York offense provided what would prove to be crucial insurance as Michael Rockett beat out an attempted double play turn for the team's third RBI fielder's choice of the night, plating Pounds who had led off with a double.

New Britain used three consecutive hits in the bottom of the eighth to put York's lead in jeopardy, but Michael Click entered to escape the jam, stranding two runners to preserve a one-run lead.

Mike DeMark worked a three-up, three-down ninth inning for the save.

Outman (0-1) took the loss for New Britain, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and five walks in five innings.

McClendon allowed just two hits and one run in his four innings, striking out six while walking three.

Each team stranded ten runners on the night.

Notes: The game marked the first road opener for the Revs since 2012 when they spoiled Sugar Land's inaugural game with a win in Texas. Repko's double on the fourth pitch of the season mirrored the start to the inaugural game in Sugar Land when leadoff hitter Scott Grimes homered on the third pitch. The Revs improve to 6-4 all-time on Opening Day, 3-2 on the road. York had opened at home five of the previous six seasons. Paniagua started his fifth consecutive opener, a franchise record. The 2016 season marks his sixth with the team, as the second longest-tenured player in team history and longest-tenured position player of all-time. York righty Jorge Martinez faces Bees southpaw Nick Greenwood on Friday at 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK app beginning at 6:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
