Revolution Midfielder Carles Gil Voted MLS Player of the Month
July 1, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Revolution midfielder Carles Gil has been voted Major League Soccer's Player of the Month for June 2021. Gil earns the honor one week after being named the MLS Player of the Week for Week 9. The Revolution captain recorded five assists in three starts during the month of June, including back-to-back multi-assist games in victories on June 19 and June 23, raising his league-leading assists total to 10 on the season.
This marks the seventh time a New England player has taken home the honor, as Gil becomes the sixth different player to earn the award. Taylor Twellman is the only Revolution player to earn Player of the Month award on two occasions (May 2002 and September 2005).
Gil started the month by recording two assists in the Revolution's 3-2 victory against New York City FC on June 19. Then in New England's victory over the New York Red Bulls on June 23, Gil assisted on every goal in the club's 3-2 win to extend the Revolution winning streak to five games, one game shy of the club record, and their undefeated streak to six games. The performances extended Gil's personal streak to five consecutive games with an assist, equaling the eighth-longest such run in MLS history.
Through 11 games this season, Gil owns 10 assists - double that of any other player in Major League Soccer. By reaching 10 assists through 10 games, the 28-year-old Spaniard equaled Carlos Valderrama (2000 - Tampa Bay Mutiny) as the fastest to reach double-digit helpers in MLS history. Gil also paces the league in several other statistical categories, including chances created, big chances created, chances created from open play, chances created from set play, dribbles completed, and successful crosses/corners. The Revolution's captain signed a new contract with the club on May 24 that will keep him in New England through the 2024 season.
Gil is set to make his 50th career MLS start when he leads the first-place Revolution into action against the Columbus Crew in the first-ever match at Lower.com Field, Saturday, July 3 at 5:00 p.m. ET. The contest airs nationally on ESPN and ESPN Deportes, and is also available locally on the radio at 98.5 The Sports Hub and 1260 AM Nossa Radio.
