New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution (14-9-10, 52 pts; . - 5th in East) conclude the 2023 MLS regular season on Saturday, Oct. 21, when they host the Philadelphia Union (15-8-10; 55 pts. - 3rd in East) on MLS Decision Day 2023. All Eastern Conference matches kick off simultaneously at 6:00 p.m. ET. Saturday's Revolution match, also the club's annual Noche Latina at Gillette Stadium, is FREE to watch on Apple TV in English and Spanish. The contest airs locally on the radio via 98.5 The Sports Hub (WBZ-FM), with Brad Feldman and Charlie Davies on the call, and 1260 AM Nossa Radio USA in Portuguese.
New England, currently sitting fifth in the Eastern Conference, heads into MLS Decision Day with plenty on the line against their I-95 rivals. With a Revolution win against the Union and a Columbus loss to Montreal, the Revolution would clinch homefield advantage in Round One of the Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs, as well as a berth in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup. If New England defeats Philadelphia by three-or-more goals, the Revolution would be guaranteed homefield advantage regardless of the result in Columbus.
Earning the homefield edge could prove pivotal in the postseason, as New England boasts one of the league's best home records. The Revolution have collected points in 15 of 16 home games this season, posting an 11-1-4 mark at Gillette Stadium. The team's 11 home wins are tied for second most in MLS and one shy of the team's single-season record.
New England has tallied results in three of its last five encounters with the Union (2-2-1). Philadelphia carries an eight-game unbeaten streak into the finale, including a 3-2 win over Atlanta United in their most recent match on Oct. 7. Forward Dániel Gazdag is pacing the Union's attack with 14 goals and 11 assists, while goalkeeper Andre Blake has registered eight clean sheets for Head Coach Jim Curtin's side.
In the team's last match, a 3-2 loss at Nashville, forward Tomás Chancalay sparked New England's attack with a two-goal performance, his second in MLS, giving the Argentine four goals in his last five games. The 24-year-old has scored six goals since his MLS debut on August 26, tied for fifth most in MLS during that span.
Fellow Argentinian striker Gustavo Bou made his first start since July and logged an assist on Chancalay's opening goal, the first scoring connection for the countrymen. The 2021 MLS Best XI forward registered a game-high five chances created over a 90-minute performance. Bou's next appearance will be his 100th MLS regular season game played for New England. In seven previous meetings with the Union, Bou has recorded a team-high three goals and two assists.
In the midfield, Revolution captain Carles Gil continues to hold his position as a candidate for the Landon Donovan MLS MVP Award. Gil owns 11 goals, a career-high for the Spaniard, in addition to 14 assists. Gil's 92 chances created rank are second most in the league. The two-time MLS Best XI honoree has found the scoresheet in five of the last seven matches, with four goals and two assists. Earlier this week, Gil was voted the Revolution's Team MVP by fans for the third time in his five seasons with the club, as well as the team's Players' Player of the Year, as voted on by his teammates.
In the backline, central defender Henry Kessler featured in New England's starting lineup last weekend for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury in April. He is expected to feature alongside Dave Romney, who is on the verge of becoming the second person to play every minute of a 34-game MLS season for the Revolution, joining Jose Goncalves (2013).
