Revolution Fall on Road to Philadelphia Union, 2-1
July 16, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New England Revolution News Release
PHILADELPHIA - The New England Revolution (6-7-7; 25 pts.) were defeated by the Philadelphia Union (10-2-9, 39 pts.), 2-1, at Subaru Park on Saturday night. Gustavo Bou delivered the goal for New England, his seventh tally in the last eight games, before the Revolution's lead was undone by goals from the hosts in the 75th and 79th minutes, the latter coming from the penalty spot.
After a tightly contested opening hour, Bou broke the deadlock in the 61st minute with a first-time finish, assisted by Brandon Bye and Carles Gil. Bou, who celebrates the three-year anniversary of his Revolution debut on Sunday, increased his total to 39 goals across the regular season and playoffs, third most in MLS during that span.
Gil's helper was his 11th of the season, moving the Revs' captain into sole possession of the MLS lead. The assist was also the 45th of Gil's regular season career, tying him for third most in club history. Dylan Borrero provided the early attacking threat for New England, recording three shots in his 63-minute shift, including an attempt from outside the box that rang off the crossbar in the 29th minute.
In central defense, Jon Bell stepped into the New England lineup for the sixth time this season and completed 94 percent of his passes. Bell, a second-year pro and Revolution II alum, logged his 15th MLS start in the match.
The Revolution wrap up the three-game road swing next Saturday, July 23 against the Columbus Crew. The match at Lower.com Field kicks off a 7:30 p.m. ET on WSBK-TV38 and myRITV (Rhode Island), as well as on the radio via 98.5 The Sports Hub and 1260 AM Nossa Radio in Portuguese.

TEAM NOTES
Gustavo Bou tallied a goal for the third straight match, his seventh goal in the last eight games. The tally was Bou's 39th goal in the MLS regular season and playoffs, third most since his arrival in New England three years ago on July 17, 2019.
Bou led the team with eight shots on the night, including five on target, a new single-game high for the Argentinian. With seven goals, Bou moves into a tie for the team's scoring lead.
Carles Gil, named a 2022 MLS All-Star earlier this week, added MLS-leading 11th assist of the season. Gil also registered six chances created on the night, moving his league-leading total to 72 on the year according to Opta.
Gil's 45 regular season assists, in only 88 games, are tied with Diego Fagundez for third most in Revolution history.
Brandon Bye notched the primary assist on Bou's opening goal, his fifth of the season, which sets a new career high. Bye is now the sixth defender in club history to record at least five assists in a season.
Jon Bell replaced the suspended Andrew Farrell on Saturday to make the 15th start of his MLS career and his sixth of the season. Bell recorded team highs in interceptions (6) and recoveries (7) while completing 94 percent of his passes.
Sebastian Lletget logged his 175th MLS regular season appearance tonight.
Bruce Arena made two changes to the Starting XI from last Saturday's match at New York City FC, as defender Jon Bell and midfielder Matt Polster started in place of Andrew Farrell (red card suspension) and Wilfrid Kaptoum.

Revolution Sporting Director & Head Coach Bruce Arena
On the discouraging result:
Arena: "I obviously think in the second half we played very well and we just blew the game. First goal [for Philadelphia], a mistake by our goalkeeper who runs into our own player and obviously, we didn't do a good job on whoever headed the ball in [Mikael Uhre]. And then the second goal, it's just a really poor play on the part of Henry Kessler. There's no reason for him to be fouling a player. So, at the very least, I think we deserved a point today and didn't get it. Philadelphia was a smarter team on the day."
On Jon Bell's performance filling in for Andrew Farrell:
Arena: "He played well. He had a good game."
On limiting mistakes late in games:
Arena: "Well, you would like to believe that through experiences, players can make better decisions. Djordje [Petrović] is still young. As a young goalkeeper, you're going to make some of those mistakes. Henry [Kessler] should have enough experience at this point to make better decisions on those type of plays. Those are not plays you can work on in training. You have to, at some point, make good decisions in tough times in games, and we didn't do that."
Revolution Defender Jon Bell
On if tonight's ending and 2-1 result was discouraging:
Bell: "It's a hard loss, because I think we really worked hard for about 70 minutes. Yeah, this is a tough loss. I think it's the second time now we've played against, probably, the two best teams in the league and we held our own for about 70, 60 minutes, and close to the end we can't finish and get the job done. It's something we've got to work on ourselves, mentally."
On his partnership with Henry Kessler:
Bell: "I think it was great. Me and Kess [Henry Kessler], we train a lot on the same team at practice. Obviously, like you said, this was the second time [in MLS]. I think we work well off each other, communication-wise - calling players out on the offensive team and on our team as well. We were able to get to click really well, really quickly."
On how the team can mitigate late-game mistakes:
Bell: "We've got to just be better. I feel like that's been an ongoing thing for us this year. Myself, I've made mistakes that cost us the game when we had the momentum and were playing really well. So, it's just a self-reflection thing on all of us. We've just got to be better and limit our mistakes, because really, I think most teams can't beat us until we make our own mistakes."
On the Revolution's goal resulting from a back-to-front buildup:
Bell: "Yeah, that's exactly what we practice for. We know that Philly is a pressing team a lot of times. I think for the most part of the game, we were able to really keep possession and pass through and hold the ball well. I would say yeah, that's how we always want to play, especially when we're trying to break the press."
Revolution Defender DeJuan Jones

On starting the second half on the front foot:
Jones: "We got off to a great start in the second half and generated a ton of chances. So, to only score one, we were pretty unlucky tonight. But yeah, I think we just fell asleep on a couple important plays and they just took advantage."
On what the team can take away from Saturday's match:
Jones: "Like you said, a lot of positives to take away. I thought we did a great job of keeping the ball. We were patient at times and that's when we generated our best chances. So, we'll take a look at the film and continue to grow from this performance. But when we score the first goal, we've got to start getting three points."
On getting into a rhythm with one game per week:
Jones: "Yeah, it's huge for rest just to mentally be there. Then physically, to get that rest and then just focus on the one game on the weekend, we're in a good stretch right now, but we've just got to start getting results."
On how he's continued to grow as an individual into his fourth MLS season:
Jones: "Week in and week out, I'm working with the coaching staff. Working on my first touch, working on playing passes forward, and looking to be more clinical in the final third, whether that's the final pass or finishing a shot myself. I'm looking to put it all together this year."
