Columbia Fireflies News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - Marcel Renteria punched out a career-high nine batters on Thursday night at Spirit Communications Park. The righty lasted 5.1 innings, allowed five earned runs, and only walked one batter. Despite the strong effort, the Fireflies dropped the series finale 11-1 to the Drive.
Matt Winaker extended his on-base streak to 20 games with a double in the third inning. The 22-year-old is also on an eight-game hitting steak - his longest of the season.
The Fireflies scored their lone run in the bottom of the second. Jay Jabs drove in Jose Brizuela with an RBI double.
Greenville's offensive surge was highlighted by the second and ninth innings. Zach Sterry and Jordan Wren launched back-to-back solo home runs in the second frame. The Drive pushed five runs across in the ninth. Sterry, again, was in the thick of the offense. He knocked in two of those runs with a double.
Conner O'Neil tossed 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Columbia. The righty recorded three strikeouts and did not give up a hit.
Columbia resumes its homestand on Friday night against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Spirit Communications Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and you can listen to the action starting at 6:45 on FOX SPORTS Radio 1400 AM or online at columbiafireflies.com. The game is also available to watch live on MiLB.tv. RHP Yeizo Campos (1-3, 3.33) starts for the Fireflies and faces RHP Luis Perez (2-2, 2.02).
