August 9, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Mother nature denied the Charleston RiverDogs a comeback effort in a five-inning, rain-shortened contest as 4,386 were on hand at Riley Park on Thursday night for the Lakewood BlueClaws' 3-0 series-claiming victory.
Lakewood (72-43, 31-15) ace Will Stewart (8-1) dealt five scoreless innings against the RiverDogs (53-60, 20-25), improving to 2-0 with 13 shutout frames in a pair of starts against the Dogs this season.
Right-hander Janson Junk (5-4) tried to match Stewart, but the RiverDogs starter allowed three runs in five innings, surrendering a pair in the fourth and giving up a solo home run to Rodolfo Duran in the fifth, the Phillies prospect's 13th of the season.
Second baseman David Metzgar collected a hit in his two plate appearances. The Lancaster, California native finished the three-game tilt 5-for-11 in his first series with Charleston since being reassigned to Extended Spring Training on May 17.
After becoming the third RiverDog this season to reach base safely five times in one game on Wednesday, left fielder Carlos Vidal came up with a hit to finish the series 5-for-8.
With the defeat, Charleston finished its season series with Lakewood, who took five of six games from the RiverDogs, including sweeping a three-game tilt in Jersey in early May.
Ballpark Fun
It was a Budweiser Thirsty Thursday presented by 95SX at The Joe. Fans enjoyed dollar beers in the Budweiser Ashley View Pub where DJ Natty Heavy kept the beats bumping throughout the game.
Upcoming
The RiverDogs next welcome the Washington Nationals Class-A affiliate Hagerstown Suns for the second leg of the seven-game homestand. Charleston right-hander Alex Mauricio (0-1, 8.84) takes the ball against righty Malvin Pena (3-0, 2.88) in the opener of the four-game wraparound set. Friday's contest begins at 7:05 and can be heard on "The Big Talker" WTMA 1250 AM and streaming live at riverdogs.com and the RiverDogs' TuneIn radio station.
RiverDogs single-game tickets, including options to the Riley Park Club, are available for the remainder of the 2018 campaign, the club's 25th season as the RiverDogs and their "175th season in dog years." Ticket information can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com.
