Reno Aces News Release
Today's Game: Bradin Hagens will make his sixth start of the season, first against the Nashville Sounds, tonight at First Tennessee Park. Hagens enters with a 2-2 record and an ERA of 6.21. In 33.1 innings, the right-hander has allowed 35 hits and struck out 33. Aces pitching staff had 11 K's last night and allowed just eight hits. Socrates Brito looks to bounce back after a 0-for-5 performance in his first game back from the Big Leagues.
Last Game: Nashville, Tenn. - The Aces first game in Nashville was a nail-biter, but Reno walked away with a 4-3 victory Tuesday night. Left-hander Alex Young, in his second career Triple-A start, earned his second consecutive win. The southpaw went 6.0 innings, allowed two hits and added six strikeouts. Offensively, the Aces were led by the reigning Pacific Coast League Player of the Week Kevin Cron. Cron went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles. Catcher Michael Perez added a double and scored one of the Aces four runs.
Redemption: On August 13, 2016, Jimmie Sherfy made his first appearance at First Tennessee Park. The Aces all-time saves leader allowed two earned runs in the bottom of the 9th to earn the blown save and his second loss of the season. Sherfy redeemed himself last night, striking out the first two batters he faced and recording his 10th save of the season. He is 10-for-10 this season in save opportunities and has 42 in his Aces career.
Major League Saves: On this date in 2007, at Petco Park, Trevor Hoffman became the first reliever to save 500 games. It took the all-time saves leader 10 ninth inning pitches, including an 87 mph fastball thrown past Russell Martin for the final out, to reach the milestone in the Padres' 5-3 victory over the Dodgers. In January 2011, Hoffman announced his retirement at San Diego's Petco Park. His totals after 18 major league seasons rank as some of the all-time best: 601 saves, 856 games finished, a 1.06 walks and hits per inning ratio, 9.36 strikeouts per nine innings and a 2.87 career ERA.
That's a Ton: Nashville starter Eric Jokisch threw a career-high 115 pitches in his outing last night. The former Reno Aces southpaw is 1-7 this season with a 5.43 ERA. Last year with the Aces Jokisch had six outings where he threw over 100 pitches. His season-high came on July 8 in a win against the El Paso Chihuahuas. Jokisch went 8-8 with a 4.21 ERA.
The Future: Arizona Diamondbacks selected 8 players in Rounds 3-10 of Major League Baseball's 2018 First-Year Player Draft. Overall, the D-backs have selected 8 college players and 3 high school players, with 7 pitchers (6 right-handed, 1 left-handed), 2 outfielders, 1 infielder and 1 catcher.
Up and Down: The D-backs recalled RHP Silvino Bracho yesterday and optioned RHP Jake Barrett. Bracho, 25, has appeared in seven games with the D-backs this season, going 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA, 12 strikeouts and a .111 opponent average. In 13 games with Reno this season, he has gone 1-1 with three saves, a 5.94 ERA and 26 strikeouts.
Doing It All: Despite playing in 43 of the Aces 59 games this season, Socrates Brito leads the team with eight stolen bases, is second on the team with 51 hits and is tied for third on the team with eight doubles. Brito is batting .368 against right-handed pitching (43-for-117) compared to just .174 against left-handers. He is batting .313 at Greater Nevada Field and on the road this season.
