Reno Aces Game Notes at Las Vegas

June 24, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

Today's Game: Sunday afternoon baseball in Las Vegas will have Matt Koch facing off against Drew Gagnon. Koch is making his first Triple-A start since April 13, having made 13 appearances with the Diamondbacks. The Aces are coming off a heartbreaking 14-11 loss Saturday night. Reno tallied 15 hits, but fell victim to Peter Alonso and his three home runs.

Last Game: The pitcher's duel between the Las Vegas 51's and Reno Aces ended in favor of the home team. Both teams finished with 15 hits, but Las Vegas had 10 extra-base hits and five home runs. Peter Alonso finished with three home runs and seven RBI Saturday night, most by an Aces opponent this season. Kristopher Negron went 3-for-5 with three-run home run and Kevin Cron finished 2-for-4 with four RBI.

(almost) Every Time: Juniel Querecuto extended his Triple-A hit streak to 12 games with a triple last night. Querecuto has hit safely in every game he has played with the Aces (19-for-51, 9 R, 3 RBI). Before his promotion to Reno, Querecuto hit safely in five consecutive games with Double-A Jackson. He has played in 59 games this season (47 in Jackson and 12 in Reno). Querecuto has recorded a hit in all but four games. He's batting .370 (81-for-219) with 15 doubles and 3 triples.

On This Day in Baseball History: On this day in 1997 Randy Johnson broke Ron Guidry's American League record for strikeouts in a game by a left-hander. The Mariners southpaw whiffed 19 A's, but still lost the Kingdome contest, 4-1.

Tough Five: The Aces are 1-4 over their last five games despite batting .272 as a team. Five Aces are batting better than .300 and Juniel Querecuto leads all aces batters with seven hits. The Aces pitching staff has allowed 35 earned runs in 43 innings of work.

Big League W's: An hour and a half worth of rain delays could not cool down the D-backs bats nor could it stop Zack Greinke from dominating on the mound as Arizona beat the Pirates, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at PNC Park. Greinke (7-5) allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter, while striking out seven over six shutout innings to win his second straight decision even as he sat through a pair of rain delays. Jake Barrett tossed an inning in relief, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout.

Heading Back: The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled RHP Braden Shipley from Triple-A Reno. Following yesterday's game, the D-backs optioned RHP Jake Barrett to Reno. Shipley, 26, is in his third stint with the D-backs this season. He has made 2 scoreless appearances (3.0 IP), both vs. Pittsburgh Pirates, on June 11 (1.2 IP) and June 12 (1.1 IP). Additionally, he was 3-4 with 1 save and a 6.40 ERA (32 ER in 45.0 IP) in 13 games (6 starts) with Reno, having been used exclusively out of the bullpen since May 22. The 6-1, 195-pounder went 0-1 with a 5.76 ERA (16 ER in 25.0 IP) in 10 games (3 starts) for Arizona in 2017. In 25 career Major League games (14 starts) over parts of 3 seasons with the D-backs (2016-18), he is 4-6 with a 5.23 ERA (57 ER in 98.0 IP).
