Renegades Coast past Brooklyn, Take Series

Brooklyn, N.Y. - The Hudson Valley Renegades clinched their first series victory over the Brooklyn Cyclones with a 7-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Maimonides Park.

Brooklyn took an early lead when Jett Williams homered to left against Brendan Beck on the first pitch of the bottom of the first to push the Cyclones in front 1-0. After the Williams home run, Beck (1-1) allowed just one hit the rest of the way and struck out six in a career-high 4.2 innings. The right-hander retired the final seven batters in his outing.

After Robert Colina retired the first batter of the third inning, the next four men reached base safely as the Renegades took the lead. Spencer Jones clubbed an opposite-field home run to tie the game at one. Alexander Vargas singled and Jesus Rodriguez doubled to place two runners in scoring position, and Christopher Familia ripped a two-run single to give the Renegades a 3-1 lead.

Two more runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning for Hudson Valley against Colina (3-4). Jared Wegner clubbed his first High-A home run, a solo shot to left to pad the 'Gades advantage to 4-1. After a Luis Santos walk, Jones singled and scored on a Vargas sacrifice fly to make it 5-1 Renegades. Jones finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, a walk, a run, and a stolen base.

Run-scoring singles from Rodriguez and Grant Richardson in the sixth and seventh innings closed out the scoring for Hudson Valley.

Out of the bullpen, Clay Aguilar and Cole Ayers each tossed a scoreless inning while Luis Velasquez (3-1) fired 2.1 scoreless frames. Velasquez extended his scoreless streak to 17.1 innings spanning nine appearances.

Ben Cowles reached base twice with a walk and a single to extend his on-base streak to 33 games. He is currently just two games shy from tying the franchise record set by Emeel Salem in 2007.

After an off day on Monday, Hudson begins a six-game series against the Aberdeen IronBirds on Tuesday night at Heritage Financial Park. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 on the Renegades Baseball Network.
