Greenville Drive News Release

The Greenville Drive (20-28, 56-58) fell 8-4 Sunday afternoon, finishing off a six-game sweep at the hands of the Winston-Salem Dash (20-26, 54-55). The loss marked the first time this season the Drive were swept in a six-game series and the first time they;ve been swept in a six-game series since 2022 when they were swept by the Rome Braves in early August.

The day started promising for the Drive as both teams traded runs in the first inning though the Drive would hold a slight 3-2 heading into the second. Kyle Teel slapped a ground ball single into left field to score Roman Anthony and Eddinson Paulino's line drive to left field later in the inning would bring in Cutter Coffey and Teel to make it 3-0.

The Dash responded with a DJ Gladney RBI-single and a Bryce Willits sacrifice fly to cut the lead to one run off reliever Casey Cobb who made a spot start for Drive ultimately tossing three innings, allowing four hits and striking out three.

Colbey Smelley knotted the game in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-single for the Dash off reliever Gabriel Jackson, who made his Drive debut Sunday. He'd ultimately last 1.1 innings giving up five hits and two runs, the second being a Brooks Baldwin RBI-single to give the Dash a 4-3 lead.

Teel would make his first catching mistake for the Drive in his seven starts, trying to gun down Wes Kath at third on the steal attempt. Teel's throw was errant, allowing Kath to steal third and then score to put the Dash up 5-3.

Coffey lifted a sacrifice fly to right field in the seventh to score Roman Anthony and draw within a run, but it would be as close the Drive would get the rest of the day. Caleb Bolden, making his second appearance in relief for the Drive, walked the first batter of the seventh and picked up a ground out before Shawn Goosenberg put the game out of reach with a two-run homer.

Nate Tellier relieved Bolden but he'd allow a sacrifice fly later in the inning, putting the Dash ahead, 8-4. The Drive mustered just one more baserunner in the final two frames on a Max Ferguson walk but couldn't do any damage, sealing the Dash victory.

The Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox) return to action on Tuesday, August 22nd at 7:00 p.m. against the Hickory Crawdads (Texas Rangers) for a six-game series with the second-half SAL South Division leaders.
