Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio - Five Pawtucket Red Sox relievers pieced together a strong pitching performance on a bullpen day and steered the PawSox to a 6-5 win over the Toledo Mud Hens on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field.
Each of the five games during the road trip so far has been decided by one run, as the PawSox (52-65) won this iteration in thrilling fashion. With the tying run at first base and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Pawtucket catcher Oscar Hernández snapped a throw down to first and caught Danny Woodrow leaning for a walk-off pick-off. The win evens the series with the Mud Hens (53-65) at a game apiece and sets up Sunday's finale as a rubber game.
Pawtucket corner infielder Bobby Dalbec (2-for-4, 2 R, HR, RBI) homered for the second game in a row - leading off the sixth inning by pulling a 416-foot blast off the video board in left. In seven games since his promotion from Double-A Portland last Saturday, Dalbec is now 11-for-27 (.407) with all three of his extra-base hits coming in the last 27 hours.
Making a spot start, reliever Mike Shawaryn dominated, striking out six in three shutout innings of one-hit work. Jenrry Mejia worked two innings in his return from the lower levels, and Ryan Brasier (W, 2-0) fanned two in a 1-2-3 sixth inning. Bobby Poyner handled the seventh and eighth, and Trevor Kelley (S, 10) secured the victory in the ninth.
Tzu-Wei Lin (3-for-5, R), Rusney Castillo (2-for-4, R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) and Josh Ockimey (2-for-4, 2B) helped propel the offense.
Toledo starter Kyle Funkhouser (L, 2-6) ceded five runs on nine hits and three walks in five innings.
The PawSox now conclude their three-game series in Toledo on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. Pawtucket right-hander Erasmo RamÃrez (4-7, 4.19) is scheduled to oppose Mud Hens righty Beau Burrows (1-5, 5.05). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 3:35 p.m.
Following the six-game road trip through Ohio, the PawSox will return home August 13-18 (Tuesday-Sunday) for a six-game homestand against the Orioles and Tigers Triple-A affiliates.
