LAST NIGHT: The Indians lost for the sixth time in their last seven games with a 9-5 setback in the series opener at Durham on Friday night. The Bulls scored seven runs in the second inning off Brandon Waddell, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Kean Wong. Waddell issued two walks and gave up six hits in the frame. Ke'Bryan Hayes put Indy on the board in the fourth with a two-run blast, and Christian Kelley made it 7-3 with an RBI groundout in the fifth. Durham pushed its lead to 9-3 before Trayvon Robinson and Hunter Owen clubbed solo homers in the ninth. Tyler Lyons (3.0ip, 1h, 1bb, 3k) and Yacksel Rios (2.0ip, 1h, 1k) combined for five scoreless innings in relief for Indianapolis.

SERIES OPENERS VS. DURHAM: Following last night's defeat, Indy is now 1-12 in its last 13 series openers against Durham dating back to the start of the 2015 campaign and including their 2017 playoff series against one another. Indy won the 2015 season series 6-4 but lost the series opener in all three sets and again won the season series 4-2 in 2016 but lost the opener both times. In 2017, the Tribe lost the season series 6-4 and were beaten in the opener in three of four series, with the lone victory coming on July 17, 2017 at Durham; Indy lost the last two games of that series, however. The Tribe lost the season series last year 4-2, including both openers. This year at Victory Field, Indy lost the series opener but won the final two games.

AT THE DBAP: Indy has struggled on the road at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, going 41-61 there since the 1998 season when the Tribe rejoined the International League. Since becoming Pittsburgh's Triple-A affiliate in 2005, the Indians have won a road series at Durham just five times (two times in 2005 and once in 2006, 2012 and 2016). Indy's .402 winning percentage at Durham is the lowest road mark for the Tribe among all IL cities.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Tribe had scored first in nine consecutive games before falling behind 7-0 through two innings last night. Indy won the first three during that nine-game stretch but lost the next five before winning game two of Thursday's doubleheader in Norfolk. Indy is a league-best 40-15 (.727) when scoring first and has scored first in 18 of its 28 games since the All-Star break, compiling a 12-6 record.

THREE HOMERS: The Indians clubbed three home runs last night but fell to 6-7 in games where they hit exactly three home runs this season (1-3 at home, 5-4 on the road). Indy has also hit four home runs in a game twice this year, both on the road. Eleven of Indy's 15 games this year with three-plus homers have come away from Victory Field.

CAREER HIGHS FOR HAYES, OWEN: Ke'Bryan Hayes two-run shot in the fourth inning last night was his career-high eighth home run. The 9-5 setback dropped Indy to 6-2 in games where the 22-year-old has homered this season, however. Hunter Owen also belted his fourth dinger with Indy and career-high 19th long ball of the season after tallying 15 with Double-A Altoona. Hayes' previous career high was seven in 2018 with Altoona, and Owen's best mark was 18 last year as well with High-A Bradenton.

TRAYVON TRIPPIN': In his last nine games dating to July 25, Trayvon Robinson is hitting .345 (10-for-29) with two homers, one double, eight RBI and two runs scored. The 31-year-old journeyman's average sits at .311 for the season and has been above .300 for all but a six-day stretch (April 5-10).

14 IS THE NUMBER: Cole Tucker has reached base safely in each of his last 14 games. He has tallied 14 hits, 14 walks and 14 strikeouts in that stretch, batting .255 with a .406 on-base percentage. Since July 25, the Tribe have scored a run in the first inning in three-of-four games where he has reached base. On the flip side, they have gone scoreless in the first inning nine-of-10 times that he hasn't reached base.

START A NEW ONE: Jason Martin saw his season-high 10-game hitting streak come to an end last night by going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. During the stretch he hit .410 (16-for-39) with six doubles, five RBI and three runs scored. He also had an eight-game hitting streak from July 14-23. Since July 1, Martin leads the team with 11 multi-hit games, followed by Will Craig (10) and Ke'Bryan Hayes (9).
