Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors battled for 60 minutes, but fell 2-1 to the Ontario Reign before of a raucous crowd of 7,914 fans at Rabobank Arena on Opening Night.
The Condors (0-1-0, 0 points) scored the first goal of the game, with rookie F Matt Caruana redirecting home a shot by D Tyler Scott at 3:59 of the opening period. The goal was the first of Caruana's career. Just seconds after a Condors shorthanded goal was waved off, Ontario (1-0-0, 2 points) tied it up. A power play goal at 19:38 by D Andrew Martens made it 1-1 after one.
The second period nearly expired without another tally, but Ontario used the man advantage to take the lead late in the frame. At 18:42 of the second, RW Geoff Walker notched his first pro goal to give Ontario a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Bakersfield battled in the third in an attempt to tie the game, but Reign G Jeff Zatkoff stood his ground. The Condors held a 13-3 shot advantage in the last stanza, and had a handful of chances during a furious final minute, but Ontario held on for the first win in team history. G Dave McKee made his Condors debut, stopping 25 of 27 shots in the loss.
