Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Phoenix RoadRunners met for the third time in three nights in the Salmon Kings only trip to Arizona this season. The Salmon Kings started goaltender Todd Ford and Phoenix countered with Craig Kowalski.

Victoria came out looking to avoid the sweep and jumped out with a quick goal by Olivier Labelle. From the left side Tim Wedderburn found Chris St. Jacques slipping out from the right corner. St. Jacques threw a cross crease pass to Labelle who beat Kowalski for the 1-0 lead. The Salmon Kings continued to put pressure on the RoadRunners, but the momentum shifted in the second half of the frame as Victoria ran into some penalty trouble. Ford and the penalty kill were equal to the task and the Salmon Kings led 1-0 after the first period.

The second period saw the Salmon Kings jump out with another quick goal when Dylan Yeo wired a shot from the top of the left circle past Kowalski for the 2-0 lead. Labelle scored his second of the night when he and St. Jacques were sent in on a two man break away by Darryl Lloyd. Labelle and St. Jacques pulled out a back-and-forth passing play that gave Labelle an empty net and the Kings a 3-0 lead. Phoenix responded late in the period with two power play goals 1:24 apart. The first goal was a point shot by Rob Dmytruk that was tipped by Kimbi Daniels that beat Ford top corner glove side. The second goal came after the Salmon Kings were thwarted on a 3-on-1 that gave the RoadRunners a 2-on-1 going the other way. On the 2-on-1 Daniel Sisca passed the puck to Daniels who fired a one-timer past Ford for his second of the night. The teams went to the rooms with the Salmon Kings leading 3-2 after 40 minutes.

The third period saw chances at both ends, but the goaltending was solid for both teams. Wes Goldie scored an empty net goal to close out the scoring and propel the Salmon Kings to their first win of 2008-09. Salmon Kings 4 RoadRunners 2
