TRENTON, N.J. (October 19, 2008) - Despite the Trenton Devils' best efforts for a comeback, they lost their third straight to begin the season as the Elmira Jackals won 3-2 Sunday afternoon.
Elmira scored first with a power play goal 4:27 into the game as Chris St. Croix fired a slap shot from the blue line between the legs of Jeff Frazee to give Elmira an early lead.
While the Devils were shorthanded, Jim Henkel capitalized on a turnover by shooting the pick at goalie Rob McVicar, leaving Tyler Burton to pick up the rebound into the goal and tie the game for Trenton at the 9:36 mark of the first period.
After a scoreless second, the Jackals took the lead for good with 6:02 remaining, as Kaleb Betts used the wrist shot from the slot to put Elmira in front. Steve Yetman added to the lead nearly two minutes later with his third goal of the season.
Chris Poli scored with the extra attacker on for the Devils, putting the Devils within a goal at 1:49 remaining. As the Devils tried to sustain pressure on McVicar, he stopped every shot after the Poli goal to seal the win for Elmira.
Both teams went 1-for-7 on the power play in the game, as McVicar made 28 saves for Elmira to earn the win.
The Trenton Devils play their first road games of the season with a pair of games in Wheeling against the Nailers taking place on Saturday, October 25 at 7:35 p.m. and Sunday, October 26 at 1:35 p.m. Fans can listen or watch the broadcast on www.trentondevils.com, courtesy of B2 Networks.
