Ontario Reign News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (1-1), four-time ECHL Pacific Division Champions and proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, evened their Pacific Division Semifinals series with the Colorado Eagles (1-1) with a 4-1 victory in front of a crowd of 3,142 on Friday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Ontario took the early lead in the first period when Matt White fished the puck loose along the left wall to Maxim Kitsyn and then darted into the slot to receive a pass from Kitsyn before blasting a shot past Clarke Saunders at 2:20.
Rocco Carzo gave the Reign a two-goal lead later in the frame as he joined Judd Blackwater during a shorthanded situation, with Blackwater patiently waiting before floating a pass across the slot to Carzo, who buried the shot at 16:32.
The Eagles responded with a shorthanded goal of their own in the second period, as Derek Rodwell flipped the puck out at his own blueline and broke into the Ontario zone, finishing the play by tucking the puck through the five hole of Joe Cannata at 16:05.
Midway through the third period, Cannata suffered an apparent lower body injury and was forced out of the game, prompting Jussi Olkinuora to come on at 10:49, while Ontario was already in the midst of killing an Everett Sheen penalty for slashing.
The Reign remained stalwart in front of Olkinuora, and as Sheen's penalty expired, he left the penalty box and received a stretch pass from Carzo, allowing Sheen to skate in alone on Saunders and beat the goaltender with a snap shot at 12:39.
Colorado pulled Saunders to gain an extra attacker late in the game, but Garry Nunn sealed the victory for Ontario with an unassisted empty-net goal at 17:57.
Cannata picked up the win with 12 saves in 50:49 of action, while Olkinuora made three stops in 9:11 of relief; Saunders took the defeat with 27 stops.
