South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays (1-1) fell to the Reading Royals (1-1) 4-2 in Game 2 of the East Division Semifinals at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday night, tying the best-of-seven series 1-1.
The Royals erupted for three goals in the first period and killed off a Stingrays 5-on-3 power play to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Defenseman Jordan Heywood opened the scoring 8:14 into the frame redirecting a pass from forward Andrew Johnston under the blocker of Stingrays netminder Jeff Jakaitis (L, 16 saves on 20 shots). Forward Brandon Alderson gave the Royals a two-goal advantage moments later rifling a shot over the glove of a screened Jakaitis from between the faceoff circles at 11:22. Heywood grabbed his second tally of the game at 17:49 capitalizing on a rebound.
In the second period, the Stingrays responded with two tallies to pull within one after 40 minutes of action. Forward Sean Dolan knocked in a loose puck on top of the crease of Royals goaltender Connor Knapp (W, 33 saves on 35 shots) for his first goal of the playoffs at 6:38. Forward Brandon Wong and defenseman Drew MacKenzie added assists. The Stingrays continued to pressure, outshooting the Royals 12-2 in the period, and forward Joe Devin found the back of the net at 15:33 settling a bouncing puck between the circles and sliding it between the legs of Knapp with help from defenseman Scott Ford and forward Sean Dolan.
Royals forward Ryan Cruthers thwarted the Stingrays' comeback early in the third period placing a rebound behind Jakaitis at 1:38. The Stingrays peppered Knapp with 12 more shots and pulled Jakaitis for an extra skater, but the Royals held on to even the series. The Stingrays finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play while the Royals went 0-for-1.
The series shifts to Reading, Pennsylvania for Game 3, 4 and 5 on Thursday, April 23, Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26.
