Ontario Reign News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Ontario Reign (7-6-0-2), four-time Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, fell to the Idaho Steelheads (11-3-1-0) by a 4-3 score in front of a crowd of 3,109 on Wednesday night at CenturyLink Arena.
The Steelheads opened the scoring at 7:16 of the first period when Charlie Dodero's point shot bounced off the end boards and settled behind the Reign net. Steve Quailer retrieved the puck from the skirt of the net and then stuffed it underneath the pads of Jussi Olkinuora.
Ontario tied the score at 17:49, when Gasper Kopitar streaked up the right wing side and blasted a shot that was initially blocked by Colin Shea, but Everett Sheen grabbed the loose puck and snapped it high to the glove side of Henri Kiviaho at 17:49.
The Reign pulled ahead in the second period when Maxim Kitsyn sent Tyler Spurgeon's rebound through the slot, and Judd Blackwater managed to whack the puck through the pads of Kiviaho at 1:50.
Ontario extended its lead to two goals when Matt Register broke up a Steelheads pass and sent a long stretch pass into the neutral zone for Tristan King, who burst into the offensive zone before beating Kiviaho with a wrist shot from the right wing circle at 6:27.
In the third, the Steelheads mounted a comeback during four-on-four play when Quailer made his way behind the Reign net and then passed the puck to Jason Bast in the slot, who one-timed the shot past Olkinuora at 5:27.
Idaho drew level at 9:13 when Alex Belzile chopped at a long range pass from Quailer, and the puck sailed into the net.
Dodero then pulled the Steelheads ahead after he received a drop pass from Wade MacLeod and then drove to the net, and banked the puck off the post at 15:52.
Although Ontario attempted to rally with Olkinuora pulled for an extra attacker, time ultimately ran out, sending the Reign to their third consecutive defeat.
Olkinuora took the loss for Ontario with 30 saves; Kiviaho earned the victory with 24 stops.
Three Stars:
1. IDH - Steve Quailer
2. IDH - Alex Belzile
3. IDH - Charlie Dodero
