Seattle Reign FC News Release
SEATTLE - Seattle Reign FC (3-2-2, 11 pts) extended its league unbeaten streak to four games against Sky Blue FC (1-4-4, 7 pts) on Saturday, June 6 in front of a crowd of 2,225 on the Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium.
Reign FC ramped up its pressure early from the start as Reign FC midfielder Keelin Winters tallied her first goal. Midfielder Jessica Fishlock threaded a ball to Winters who then slotted her shot past Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Brittany Cameron to give Reign FC the lead in the 8th minute.
The match continued to be all Seattle as chance after chance fell for the home side. In the 28th minute, defender Stephanie Cox delivered a perfectly placed cross for Fishlock who headed it home for Reign FC's second goal of the night.
The game slowed down for both teams following half time but Reign FC remained patient on the ball. In the 77th minute, a foul was whistled just outside the Sky Blue FC 18 in favor of Reign FC. Midfielder Kim Little's kick hit the Sky Blue FC wall players and the ref awarded a penalty kick to the home side.
Little stepped up to the spot and buried a powerful penalty into the upper left hand roof of the net to put Reign FC up 3-0.
"Kim can go forward. It's not just about goals for Kim. It's everything else that she brings to the game," head coach and general manager Laura Harvey said in the post-match press conference. "I think you saw tonight, between Kim, Jess [Fishlock], and Bev [Yanez], some of the link-up play they do at time is just scary."
Reign FC outshot Sky Blue FC 19 goals to four, registering a total of 12 shots on goal. On the defensive end, Reign FC registered its second consecutive shutout in the victory as well extended an unbeaten streak on the Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium to 17 games.
Goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer made one save on the night to preserve her second clean sheet of the season.
With the win, Reign FC jump two spots from fifth place to tie the Boston Breakers for third place. Saturday's match was the second of three regular season games between Reign FC and Sky Blue FC.
The two teams played to a 1-1 draw on May in New Jersey, and the two teams will again face off on August 29 at Yurcak Field.
After playing three straight home matches, Seattle now has a two-week break during FIFA Women's World Cup play, before returning to action on Sunday, June 21 against the Boston Breakers. That matchup is set for a 1 p.m. PT at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Boston.
