Flash End Chicago's Undefeated Run; Win 3-1 at Home

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Saturday, June 6, 2015) - The Western New York Flash won its second-consecutive game on Saturday night by handing the Chicago Red Stars its first loss of the season. After a 0-0 score at half, the Flash went on to score three unanswered goals en route to a 3-1 victory in front of 2,514 fans at Sahlen's Stadium.
The Flash (3-3-1, 10 points) will now enter the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup break, as the National Women's Soccer League will enter a 12-day hiatus during the tournament's group stage.
"The goals were special. I'm just proud of the team's performance," said Flash general manager and head coach Aaran Lines. "A young team coming out the way we did and playing that way in the second half, it gave them confidence and belief. We can play with anyone in this league."
After Elizabeth Eddy entered as a second-half substitute, the midfielder made an immediate impact, assisting on Samantha Mewis' third goal of the season. Eddy collected a cross-field pass from Jamia Fields before finding Mewis checking to the middle. The rookie cut through multiple Red Stars defenders before tucking the ball in the far, right corner.
Eddy then scored her first professional goal on a cheeky play in the 72nd minute. Inside the 18, Eddy chipped a Lynn Williams' pass into the air to herself, then loft the ball over Michele Dalton to make it 2-0. Her assist on the previous goal was her first professional point.
Fields then finished off the Flash scoring with a golazo, blasting the ball past Dalton from 30-yards out. The Florida State product cut to the middle and unloaded a shot with her left foot, picking out the far, upper 90.
Chicago ended Chantel Jones' bid for a shutout in the 93+ minute on a goal from May Player of the Month Sofia Huerta, but not before Jones stopped a late penalty kick taken by Vanessa DiBernardo.
Jones finished with five saves in her first start, and win, in a Flash uniform.
"It's been week-by-week for us. We have a ways to go with the season but, as you can see, we're heading in the right direction," Lines added. "We're gaining experience and working on things and tweaking things every week. The players are very receptive of that and that's why we are where we are right now."
Saturday's game also featured a game-worn jersey raffle for "Race Night" presented by Watkins Glen International. Overall, the fans helped raise $1,875 for Golisano Children's Hospital.
The Flash will next take the field on June 20, when the team travels to the Houston Dash for an 8:30 p.m. ET contest.
The Flash return to Sahlen's Stadium on July 3 for "Hometown Heroes Night", welcoming defending NWSL Shield Winner Seattle Reign FC at 7 p.m. ET.
