Today's Game: The RedHawks will look to build off last night's shutout and attempt to win back-to-back home games for the first time this season when they face New Orleans at 7:05 p.m.
Last Game: The RedHawks registered their second shutout of the season in a 2-0, rain-shortened victory over New Orleans. Right after the RedHawks plated a run in the bottom of the sixth, the game was stopped due to rain. After a 2-hour, 40-minute delay, the game was called and officially completed early due to wet field conditions. Making his first start since rejoining the RedHawks, Dallas Keuchel (W, 1-0) turned in a three-hit shutout. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. The RedHawks got on the board in the first inning. Following a two-out error by New Orleans, Marc Krauss hit an RBI double to make it 1-0. Andy Simunic added a sac fly in the sixth to finish the scoring.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Jordan Lyles makes the start, looking to rebound after a tough previous start...On Tuesday in Albuquerque, Lyles allowed five runs and eight hits over just one inning, tying the shortest start of his career...The Isotopes led 1-0 with the bases empty and two out before recording six-straight hits and having seven-straight men reach base, adding four more runs in the process...He would not return for the second inning after throwing 45 pitches...The last time Lyles had a start last just one inning was in his 11th career start on August 12, 2008 while pitching with Rookie-level Greeneville against Johnson City...Prior to Tuesday, Lyles had allowed just a total of five runs (four earned) over his previous three outings...He's done a great job this season throwing strikes and getting groundouts...Lyles has walked just one batter over his last four outings (14.1 IP) and is averaging three groundouts for every flyout...He has made two career appearances against the Zephyrs, tossing eight scoreless innings with eight strikeouts
Against the Zephyrs: 2013: 1-1 2012: 8-8 All-time: 125-114 In OKC: 70-51
Last season's series was about extremely even...Each team won consecutive games against the other just once, and neither won three straight...There was one 10-game stretch where the squads alternated wins and losses...The RedHawks hit an impressive .308 against the Zephyrs, but New Orleans outscored OKC 105-90...The Zephyrs bashed 27 homers over the 16 games, representing 18 percent of their season total...Jimmy Paredes hit .389 against New Orleans pitching...Neither team has won 10 or more games against the other in a season since 2006.
He Loves a Rainy Day: Yesterday Dallas Keuchel claimed his second rain-shortened shutout in as many seasons. On May 31, 2012 he was also credited with a shutout in a 2-0 win over Nashville completed in five innings. In the two abbreviated games combined, Keuchel allowed just eight hits with no walks and eight strikeouts over 11 innings. The lefty now has eight career complete games and three career shutouts.
The Long and Short of It: The last two nights have produced the rare occurrence of an extra-inning game immediately followed by a game shorter than nine innings that was not scheduled to be. There have been a few times where a game that was scheduled to be less than nine innings followed a game longer than nine innings, most recently on Sept. 1-2, 2010 when the RedHawks beat Nashville 3-2 in 10 innings and then lost 3-2 the next day in the first game of a doubleheader.
On the Marc: After going 2-for-3 yesterday, Marc Krauss has hit safely in all 10 home games, batting at a .429 clip with 15 RBI. On Monday he was named PCL Player of the Week, after hitting .455 with six extra-base hits and 10 RBI. His 20 RBI for the season is tied for eighth in the PCL and is tied at the top among Astros farmhands.
Valiant Villar: After getting off to a 2-for-34 start, Jonathan Villar is 18-for-47 (.383) over his last 11 games. He's hit safely in nine of the games and had more than one hit eight times. His eight multi-hit games this season is second on the team, only one behind of Jimmy Paredes, who has 10. During this stretch he has collected all seven of his RBI and all six of his extra-base hits for the season.
Paredes Popping Off: Jimmy Paredes is 7-for-13 the last three games and has collected at least two hits each time out. Paredes leads the team with 29 hits and 10 multi-hit games. Last year he set a team single-season record with 161 hits.
Elmore, More, More: Since last night's game ended in the sixth inning, Jake Elmore saw his on-base streak halt at 19 consecutive games to start the season after getting just three plate appearances. The second baseman is just one of three players in the PCL with a consecutive on-base streak of at least 19 games this season.
Yard Work: The RedHawks have not homered in eight consecutive home games. In 2011, the RedHawks also had a stretch of eight-straight homerless games at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark (Aug. 12-19). The longest streak occurred in 2009, when the team didn't go deep for 13-straight home games (Apr. 30-May 7). Their three dingers in OKC are the least home runs hit by a PCL team at its home park this season. On the other hand, the 13 home runs allowed by the pitching staff are tied for second-least in the league.
All or Nothing: Through the first 21 games of the season, the RedHawks pitching staff has allowed seven or more runs 12 times, but has limited the opposition to three or less runs in the other nine games.
Home on the Range: The RedHawks are off to a surprising 4-6 start at home this season. It's the third time in team history they've dropped six of their first 10 games in Bricktown. Last night's win avoided the first 3-7 home start in team history.
