Iowa Cubs News Release
Papillion, NE - The Chicago Cubs have placed Iowa infielder Donnie Murphy on the disabled list, effective April 24, with a sprained left knee. The I-Cubs active roster now stands at 24 players.
In 14 games with Iowa, Murphy is batting .205 (8-for-39) with a double, three RBI, a stolen base, seven walks, and 17 strikeouts. He suffered this knee injury while making a fielding play on Tuesday afternoon in Memphis. The Cubs signed Murphy as a minor league free agent on April 3 and assigned him to Iowa in time for Opening Day. Murphy had been in spring training with the Milwaukee Brewers, but asked for his release in late March. Murphy has played in 244 major league games with the Royals (2004-05), A's ('07-08), and Marlins ('10-12). The Royals drafted him in the fifth round of the 2002 draft out of Orange Coast Community College in his native California.
The Cubs play game three of a four-game series at Werner Park in Omaha tonight at 7:05. RH Drew Carpenter (1-2, 5.68) will be on the mound for Iowa against RH Brian Sanches (1-1, 5.93) for the Storm Chasers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
