Tonight's Game-- After splitting their series in Reno, the RedHawks continue their 12-game road trip in Colorado Springs. Pitcher Wes Musick makes his team and Triple-A debut.
Last Night-- The RedHawks overcame an early four-run deficit and crushed four more home runs in a 10-9 victory over the Reno Aces Sunday afternoon. One day after getting out to a 9-0 lead, the Aces shot out to a 4-0 lead in the first. The RedHawks responded in the second with five runs, aided by three errors by Aces first baseman Mike Jacobs. After a sac fly by Jimmy Paredes pulled the RedHawks within one, Fernando Martinez hit a two-run homer to put the RedHawks in the lead, 5-4. Landon Powell hit his third homer of the series in the next inning, a two-run shot that put the RedHawks up 7-4. Reno scored once in the bottom of the third, but Scott Moore answered with a solo homer in the fourth. Brett Wallace homered in the seventh, and the RedHawks led 10-8 heading into the ninth. The Aces scored a run and put the tying runner in scoring position with two outs, but Jose Valdez struck out Ryan Budde to end the game and record his ninth save. RedHawks reliever David Carpenter (1-0) was awarded the win after retiring all five hitters he faced between the seventh and eighth innings.
Today's Probable Pitchers-- Wes Musick makes both his RedHawks and Triple-A debut...The lefty has already spent time at two other levels in the Astros system this season...He began the year with Lancaster, going 3-1 with a 2.51 ERA in five starts...Allowed two runs or less four times...Tossed first career complete game in loss at Lake Elsinore on April 20 (8 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, BB, 4 K)...Promoted to Corpus Christi on May 7...Took loss in debut despite allowing just one run and six hits over seven innings...In three games with Hooks allowed four runs and nine hits over 12 innings...Limited Texas League hitters to a .214 average and struck out 14...Musick is a former Rockies farmhand who was drafted by Colorado in the ninth round in 2009...He was traded to Houston along with current RedHawk Jonnathan Aristil for Matt Lindstrom on Dec. 23, 2010...Rob Scahill is set to make his ninth start for the Sky Sox...He currently leads the team in innings (42.0), wins (3) and strikeouts (49)...His 5.79 ERA is deceiving, as he has allowed two runs or less five times...Scahill's 49 strikeouts rank fourth in the PCL and his 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings is second-best in the league...He was selected by Colorado in the eighth round in the 2009 draft from Bradley University.
Homer Happy-- The RedHawks have hit 28 homers in their last 15 games and are first the PCL with 50 home runs. 31 of their last 46 runs overall have scored via homers. They hit 12 dingers during their four-game set in Reno, by far their most in a series this season. (Previous high was seven.) In addition, the Redhawks have hit four homers in a game three times in their last five games, and they have also hit at least one dinger in each of the past six games, setting a new season-long streak.
Hot Bats-- Over their last eight games, the RedHawks have scored 59 runs with 98 hits, including 19 homers.
Hail Hessman-- Earlier today, Mike Hessman was named PCL Player of the Week (May 14-20). Over his last seven games, Hessman is hitting .423 (11-for-26) with six homers, three doubles, and 12 RBIs. On Thursday, he became the second RedHawk this season with five hits in a game (J.B. Shuck, April 28 vs. Round Rock.) In 16 games in May, Hessman is hitting .377 with eight homers and 14 RBIs. He is the active leader in career minor league home runs, and his 339 blasts are almost 100 more than Val Pascucci of Buffalo, who is second on the list with 242. Combined with his homers from the Majors and Japan, Hessman has a total of 359 career home runs since beginning his professional career in 1996.
Plenty of Paredes-- Yesterday Jimmy Paredes collected his seventh multi-hit effort over his last eight games. During this stretch he has gone 18-for-36 with one home run and six RBIs. He leads the team with 50 hits, 29 runs scored, as well as 11 stolen bases.
More Moore-- After surviving an 0-for-15 stretch over six games, Scott Moore has returned to his usual form. Over his current five-game hit streak, Moore is 8-for-20 with two home runs and five RBIs.
Saving the Day-- After closing out yesterday's game, Jose Valdez is 9-for-9 in save opportunities this season. Last year he went 9-for-9.
You Better Think Twice-- The RedHawks have caught 21 of 47 attempted base stealers for a 44.7% caught stealing rate, the best in the PCL. (Sacramento is next at 41.5%.) Landon Powell ranks first in the league, going 10-for-17, and Carlos Corporan is second with an 11-for-27 mark.
Close Calls-- Yesterday's one-run game was the 18th of the season for the RedHawks--the second-most in the PCL behind Iowa (21). Nine of their 19 losses half been by a single tally. The RedHawks are also tied for the most extra innings losses in the league with four.
Against the Sky Sox-- Last season these teams split a four-game series at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark...Each of the last two games were settled in extra innings by one run...The RedHawks hit .241 in the series and did not hit a home run...Brett Wallace went 5-for-13 with four RBIs...In their previous trip to the Springs in 2010, the RedHawks dropped three of four, including the last three straight by one run.
