Tonight's Game-- The RedHawks will look to become part of team history as they aim for their 13th straight home victory when they face Iowa at 7:05 p.m. to conclude their series with the Cubs.
Last Night-- Mike Hessman homered two more times, including a seventh-inning shot that proved the difference in the RedHawks' 6-5 win over the Cubs. The Cubs took an early 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Anthony Rizzo. Ty Wright homered to lead off the fourth to make it 2-0. Jimmy Paredes and Hessman each left the yard in the fourth to tie the game. Three straight singles followed Hessman's home run, including an RBI single by Angel Sanchez to put the RedHawks in front, 3-2. After the Cubs seized the lead with three runs in the sixth, the RedHawks tied the game later in the inning, with Brandon Barnes and Sanchez each collecting RBI singles. They loaded the bases with one out but could not score, keeping the game 5-5. With one away in the seventh, Hessman took the first pitch from Esmailin Caridad (0-3) nearly out of the stadium to put the RedHawks in front. The Cubs put the tying runner at second with two outs in the eighth, but Mickey Storey (3-2) got Luis Valbuena to pop out to end the inning. With closer Jose Valdez unavailable, Juan Abreu retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his third save.
Tonight's Probable Pitchers-- Coming off his first Triple-A win, Wes Musick makes his fourth start for the RedHawks...Against Nashville on Thursday, Musick tossed his second quality start with the RedHawks, allowing one run and seven hits with no walks over six innings...Musick surrendered a run in the first inning but held the Sounds scoreless over his final five innings...He threw 60 of his 85 pitches for strikes...Musick is already playing for his third Astros affiliate this season, making previous stops at High-A Lancaster and Double-A Corpus Christi...Between the three teams he is 4-3 with a 3.05 ERA over 11 appearances (nine starts)...Iowa's Frankie De La Cruz is having a fine season in his first in the Cubs organization...His 2.78 ERA would lead the PCL, but he is one out shy of qualifying among league leaders...De La Cruz has split the year betwen the bullpen and the rotation, and as a result, he has only lasted past five innings once in six starts...Opponents are only hitting .218 against him overall, and lefties have been limited to a .158 clip...De La Cruz has made 26 career appearances in the Major Leagues with the Tigers, Marlins, Padres, and Brewers, going 0-0 with an 8.16 ERA.
A Dandy Dozen, Part I-- Last night, the RedHawks won their 12th-straight game at home. With a win tonight, they will tie the franchise record for most consecutive home wins in a season. The RedHawks won their final 13 home games of 1999 as well as the first two of 2000.
A Dandy Dozen, Part II-- The RedHawks are 12 games above .500 for the first time since August 5, 2008 when they were 65-53. It's the earliest they have been 12 games over since the team was 36-24 on June 7, 2005.
Seventh Heaven-- The RedHawks have won seven straight games for the first time since April 7-13, 2008. The last time the team won eight straight was part of a nine-game winning streak August 2-12, 2005, which is still tied for the franchise record.
Hessman's Place in History-- With two more home runs, Mike Hessman became the third player in PCL history to hit five homers over two consecutive games and the first since 1988. On Sunday he became the fifth player in team history to hit three home runs in a game and the first since Chad Tracy in 2010. Hessman had one previous three-homer game on April 20, 2008 with the Toldeo Mud Hens against the Louisville Bats (4x5, 5 RBI). He is the active leader in career minor league home runs with 364.
Outhit, Not Outclassed-- Yesterday the RedHawks did not outhit their opponent for the 11th time 12 games. Over the 11 games, they've been outhit seven times and had the same amount of hits as the opposition four times. It hasn't been a problem, as they've won each of the last four times they've been outhit.
Angel in the Infield-- With two RBIs yesterday, shortstop Angel Sanchez collected at least one RBI for the ninth time in his last 12 games. He's hitting .351 (13x37) with two homers and 12 RBIs during this span.
"RedHawks North"/"Cubs South"-- The current Iowa Cubs roster features three players who suited up for the RedHawks earlier this season or last season: Brian Esposito, Diory Hernandez, and Ryan Rowland-Smith. Brad Snyder spent parts of the last three seasons with the I-Cubs, and Scott Moore played there in 2006-2007 as well as last season.
Against the Cubs-- The RedHawks have won seven straight home games over the Cubs dating back to last season...They have also taken nine of the last 10 one-run games between the two squads...In 2011, the RedHawks went 10-6 against Iowa despite being outscored by six runs...The RedHawks also defended their home turf, winning seven of eight...It's a good thing Scott Moore plays for the RedHawks now since he hit .405 against the OKC pitching staff last season...These teams next meet June 27-29 in Des Moines.
