TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers struggled early and never recovered in an 8-1 loss to the Sacramento River Cats at Cheney Stadium on Tuesday.

Sacramento put the Rainiers in a quick 3-0 hole thanks to designated hitter Daric Barton's two-out, three-run home run in the top of the first inning.

Tacoma's troubles continued in the over the next two frames, with Grant Green's RBI-single in the second and Jermaine Mitchell's two-run single in the third upping the Rainiers deficit to 6-0 through three innings.

Sacramento second baseman Eric Sogard scored on a wild pitch and Brandon Moss hit a solo home run to put the River Cats up 8-0 before catcher Ralph Henriquez accounted for the Rainiers lone run with a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth.

Outfielder Franklin Gutierrez collected two of the Rainiers four hits on Tuesday, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in the third game of his Major League rehab assignment with the Rainiers.

Starter Jeff Marquez (4-6) was dealt the loss after he was touched for six runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Relievers Cesar Jimenez (2.0) and Chance Ruffin (1.0) combined to give up two runs on four hits from the sixth through the eighth innings, and Steve Delabar turned in a hitless, scoreless inning in the ninth.

The Rainiers (24-35) enjoy a scheduled league off day tomorrow before opening a four-game series with the Salt Lake Bees at Cheney Stadium on Thursday, June 7.
