Iowa Cubs News Release
Oklahoma City, OK - Former Iowa Cub Brad Snyder launched a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Oklahoma City RedHawks (36-23) a 4-3 win over Iowa (25-33) at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark tonight. The Cubs are on a six-game losing streak and finished 6-6 on this road trip. The RedHawks have won eight straight overall and 13 in a row at home.
The Cubs built the early lead against RedHawks' starter Wes Musick. In the top of the second inning, Luis Valbuena smacked a leadoff double, went to third on a groundout by Ty Wright, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Blake Lalli.
The Cubs took advantage of a pair of RedHawks' errors to add to their lead in the third. Diory Hernandez led off with a double and pitcher Frankie De La Cruz laid down a bunt. Second baseman Jimmy Paredes was late to cover first on the bunt and third baseman Matt Downs' throw hit De La Cruz in the left hamstring as Hernandez scored. De La Cruz had to come out of the game and Anthony Rizzo ran for him at first base. Brett Jackson followed with a single, advancing Rizzo to second base. After a flyout, Josh Vitters hit a chopper sharply up the middle. Musick snagged it cleanly, but threw the ball into center field for an error allowing Rizzo to score. Musick settled down and didn't allow another baserunner through six innings.
Jay Jackson took over for De La Cruz in the bottom of the third and was strong in relief. He worked five innings and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four. The run came in the seventh inning. With two outs, Snyder singled, stole second, and scored on a base hit by Brandon Barnes.
Scott Maine pitched a perfect eighth inning for the Cubs to set up Rafael Dolis for the save opportunity in the ninth. Brian Bixler and Paredes opened the ninth with consecutive singles to put the potential tying runs on base. Dolis came back to strike out Downs and Mike Hessman to bring Snyder to the plate. On a 1-2 pitch, Snyder connected on a fastball and drove it over the wall just to the left of dead-center field for his ninth home run of the season.
Dolis (0-1) was charged with a blown save and a loss. Enerio Del Rosario (2-1) set the Cubs down in order in the top of the ninth inning and was credited with his second win of the series.
The Cubs are off tomorrow and open a new home stand on Thursday night at Principal Park against the Nashville Sounds. Game time is 7:05. Starting on Thursday, the Cubs are home for 13 games in 11 days, including double-headers on Friday and Saturday night against the Sounds.
