RedHawks Game Notes June 30th

Oklahoma City Comets News Release


The Oklahoma City RedHawks and Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers) wrap up a 4-game series at Greer Stadium with the RedHawks seeking a split after an 11-1 loss last night. OKC has won 7 of its last 9 and 8 of 11, remaining 1.5 games back of Albuquerque in the American South Division. Nashville is leading the American North, 3.5 games ahead of Iowa. Right-handed rehabber Dustin Nippert will get the start for the RedHawks, his first with OKC this season after two rehab stints with Double-A Frisco (see note below). Lefthander Chris Cody gets the call for Nashville. Cody earned a win over OKC on June 19, allowing 2 runs in 8 innings at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in his only career appearance against the RedHawks.

11-1 SHOT: Each game this series has featured an 11-1 score at some point. Nashville won by that score yesterday. The RedHawks built an 11-1 lead through 8 innings Sunday in a 12-1 win and the Sounds led 11-1 on Saturday after 5 innings en route to an 11-5 tally.

STRANGE DAYS INDEED: OKC-Nashville games this year have not lacked runs. Three of OKC's top 4 single-game run outputs this season have been in Nashville: 17 runs (April 16), and 12 runs on Sunday and April 14. OKC has scored 339 runs this season and 12.1% have come in those 3 games at Greer Stadium. On the other side, Nashville has out-scored OKC in the Sounds' last 4 wins in the season series 43-10. OKC leads the season series 6-5, but the RedHawks' last 4 losses to the Sounds have been by final scores of 11-1, 11-5, 14-3 and 7-1.

NIPPERT RETURNS: Texas Rangers righthander Dustin Nippert will make a rehab start tonight, his first of the year with the RedHawks. Nippert has missed the entire season with a strained right rhomboid muscle in his back/rib cage area. He's had 2 rehab tours with Double-A Frisco, going a combined 0-1 with a 2.84 ERA in 4 outings.

BORBON GOES UP: Julio Borbon, who served as OKC's leadoff hitter in 71 of the first 75 games, was promoted to Texas yesterday for his Major League debut and went 0-for-3 as the Rangers' DH in a 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. Reliever Willie Eyre, who was on a rehab assignment with the RedHawks as recently as Thursday, was optioned to OKC.

BULLPEN COMES THROUGH: In the last 9 games, the RedHawks' bullpen has combined to pitch 31 innings while allowing 5 runs on 20 hits, a 1.45 ERA. The bullpen's 4.62 ERA is unchanged from yesterday, the first time it hasn't dropped since June 19. The pen had lowered its ERA after 8 consecutive games prior to last night.

HOME RUNS GALORE: RedHawks pitching has allowed 7 homers this series, dropping from the fewest allowed in the PCL prior to last night to third-fewest today. OKC allowed only 3 home runs during the previous 11-game homestand. The RedHawks have surrendered 50 home runs, one more than Memphis and Las Vegas.

BACK A NOTCH: Last night's game was OKC's second attempt this series at reaching .500 for the first time since an April 23 win squared their record at 7-7. The RedHawks' losses last night and Saturday put them 2 games under. OKC has not been above .500 this season.

GERMAN STREAKING: Esteban German has a 16 game on-base streak dating to June 12. In that span, he has hits in 12 games, has extended the streak by walk 3 times and by a hit-by-pitch once. German leads the team with a .309 batting average, 38 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. He's third in the PCL in on-base percentage at .427 and third in walks with 49.
