RedHawks Falter Late, Lose to Canaries

FARGO, ND - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks held a two run lead for the majority of the game on Wednesday night, but the Sioux Falls Canaries scored three in the seventh and three in the ninth to put the game out of reach. In front of 3,360 fans, the Canaries defeated Fargo-Moorhead 7-3.

The Canaries struck right away in the first. Jerome Pena lead off the game with a double and he was driven in on the next at-bat by a Michael Wing single giving Sioux Falls the early 1-0 lead.

The RedHawks answered in the bottom half of the frame. Zach Penprase started it with a single, and Mozingo followed with a double deep to right bringing Penprase around to score from first. The RedHawks would score again in the fourth inning off a Joe Staley solo home run sent over the fence in right field to take a 3-1 lead.

RedHawks starter Brandon Mann surrendered the run in the first but settled down after that. The wiley veteran held the Canaries scoreless for five straight innings but ran into trouble in the seventh. He allowed runners on first and second with no outs, and Manager Doug Simunic opted to go with reliever Ty Kelley. Michael Wing ripped a double down the line in left bringing around two tying the ball game 3-3.David Bergin would bring him in shortly after giving Sioux Falls a 4-3 lead. Bergen's single would take the game's decision out of Mann's hands after he went six innings, allowed three runs (all earned) on seven hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

Trouble returned in the ninth inning. Reliever Jonathan Chudy was on in damage control, and with two outs a routine fly ball hit to left by Bergin got lost in the lights and dropped behind Chad Mozingo. Harrison Kain and Wing would come around to score extending the lead to 6-3. Bergin would score later in the inning on a Frank Salerno throwing error pushing the lead to 7-3. Sioux Falls retired the side to end the game in the bottom half of the ninth.

Michael Wing had a monster game for the Canaries. The man behind the plate went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs. David Bergin also had a big game, as he went 2-for-5 with one run scored and three runs driven in. Harrison Kain and Brian Humphries also had two hits apiece.

Chad Mozingo and Joe Staley had multi-hit games for Fargo-Moorhead. Mozingo went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI while Staley went 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs.

Ty Kelley (0-3) took the loss for the RedHawks while Stephan Bougher (2-0) earned his second win of the season in as many starts. Cameron McVey picked up his second save of the season.

The RedHawks drop their third straight to the Canaries and fall to 7-19 while Sioux Falls improves to 14-13. The two teams will finish up the four game set tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m first pitch time. Tyler Herron is set to take the mound for Fargo-Moorhead. The homestand continues for the RedHawks on Friday, as the Winnipeg Goldeyes come to town for a three-game weekend series.
