Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks C Alan Rick rocketed a grand slam homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap the RedHawks five-run comeback and give the RedHawks a 12-11 victory over the first-place Winnipeg Goldeyes in front of 3,928 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Friday night.
The game started as a RedHawks rout, as RF Mike Coles led off the home half of the first inning with a double to dead center. SS Zach Penprase plated Coles with a double of his own to make it 1-0 RedHawks. With 3B Jeremiah Piepkorn at the plate, Penprase nabbed his league-leading 21st stolen base of the season and scored on an RBI groundout.
In the fourth inning, RedHawks 1B Randall Simon hit a leadoff triple and 2B Carlo Cota drew a walk. With men at the corners, Simon scored on Rick's fielder's choice and Rick scored on Coles' second double of the evening to make it 4-0 RedHawks. CF Nic Jackson hit a fifth-inning homerun, his 10th of the season, to give the RedHawks a 5-0 lead. The RedHawks added a two-run cushion on a pair of RBI singles by Cota and Jackson to make it 7-0.
The Goldeyes got on the board in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by C Dustin Richardson. The Goldeyes crept within three runs on CF Cory Patton's three-run big fly to make it 7-4. In the eighth inning, Goldeyes DH Juan Diaz smashed a grand slam homerun on a full-count offering from RedHawks reliever RHP T.J. Stanton to give the Goldeyes a 10-7 lead. 3B Brent Metheny added an RBI triple to put the Goldeyes up 11-7.
But the RedHawks were not about to go home quietly. Penprase led off the eighth inning with a double to the right-center gap and scored on an RBI single by Piepkorn. With the bases loaded, Rick responded with the game-winning grand slam to give the RedHawks the 12-11 lead.
Stanton took the win, while Goldeyes closer Matt Davis was tagged with the loss.
The RedHawks and Goldeyes will play a double header on Saturday evening starting at 6:00 p.m. Both games will be seven innings.
