Flyers Lose Late

Schaumburg Flyers News Release

GARY, IN - Mike Massaro drove in two runs for Gary with a two-out double in the eighth inning to come from behind to beat the Flyers 3-2 Friday night at the U.S. Steel Yard.

The RailCats got on the board in the third against Flyers starter Tom Lyons when Brett Wallace led off with a double, and after moving to third on a Rob Marconi bunt, scored on a Mike Massaro single to left.

Schaumburg tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth with a little help from the wind. Felix Jose led off the frame by popping one up to shallow left center. Gary shortstop Jay Pecci ranged back towards left, but the wind - which usually blows off the lake in from left -howled towards right and pushed the ball over his back shoulder, falling in for a double. TJ Wilson drilled a double to the gap in right center to score Jose with two outs.

The score remained tied at one into the seventh when the Flyers received a gift. John Toussas bunted over Jose who led off the inning with a walk, and then Tony Mansolino bounced out to second. But first baseman Steve Haake forgot that Jose was still aboard, remembering midway through his delivery to throw the ball around the horn and short-arming a throw into center field. Jose jogged in to give the Flyers their first lead of the night at 2-1.

Jeff Dunbar retired the first two RailCats in the fateful eighth inning then gave up back-to-back singles to Wallace and Marconi before exiting for Cephas Howard, who allowed the game-winner to Massaro. Massaro finished a game-best 3-4 with 3 RBI. Wallace and Marconi each tallied two hits as well.

Dunbar takes the loss, falling to 1-1. The win goes to Eddie De la Cruz who is now 4-0.

Both starting pitchers took no-decisions, with Lyons going five innings and allowing one run on six hits, and Garrett Holleran allowing one run on five hits over six innings pitched.

LHP Carmen Pignatiello (4-5, 5.72) will take on Gary's LHP Tony Cogan (4-5, 4.20) tomorrow with the first pitch being thrown at 6:00 at the U.S. Steel Yard.
