Kansas City Monarchs News Release
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Kansas City T-Bones (25-29) were unable to overcome an early deficit as they fell to the Joliet JackHammers (22-34), 7-3, in front of 6,449 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
The Jackhammers opened the scoring when Freddie Thon hit an RBI single off Cody McAllister (4-2) to start a four-run first. McAllister surrendered the second run of the frame when a wild pitch scored Adam Klein before Wally Backman Jr. plated the final two runs with an RBI single, giving Joliet a 4-0 advantage. Greg Jacobs responded with a solo home run off of Derek Barrows (2-0) in the bottom of the inning to cut the T-Bones' deficit to three.
Phil Avlas added a two-run homer in the fourth to push the JackHammers' lead to five. McAllister would leave after four innings surrendering six runs on seven hits while taking the loss.
Chris Rhoads relieved McAllister and threw two scoreless frames before surrendering a sacrifice fly to Kevin Rios in the seventh for Joliet's seventh and final run of the contest. Neb Brown homered to begin the Kansas City eighth to push the score to 7-2. After a two-out single and hit by pitch, Barrows departed in favor of Devin Anderson. The next batter, Jacobs, singled to the second baseman to advance Aharon Eggleston to third. Eggleston scored the T-Bones final run on the play, coming home on an errant throw in an attempt to get the force at second.
Barrows was charged with four runs, three earned, on three hits in seven and two-thirds innings of work. Weston Curles finished the game for the T-Bones, retiring six of the seven batters he faced over the final two innings.
Dustin Bolton (3-2, 6.75) will take the mound for the T-Bones against Nate Sevier (0-0, 0.00) and Joliet in game two of the series tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:05.
