RedHawks Beat Goldeyes in Extras

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (51-36) lost 5-2 in 10 innings to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Shaw Park on Monday night.

Tied at 2-2 in the top of the 10th, Ryan Pineda singled to left leading off. Pineda was erased on a fielder's choice on Keury de la Cruz's groundball to first base. de la Cruz stole second with Josh Mazzola at the plate. After Mazzola was struck out, KD Kang was intentionally walked. Dustin Geiger followed with a two-out, three-run home run to left field.

The Goldeyes brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 10th on singles from David Rohm and Josh Romanski before RedHawks' reliever Brett Zawacki struck out Casio Grider to end the game. Zawacki earned his first save of the year.

The RedHawks struck first when Mazzola singled home Pineda in the top of the fourth inning.

In the fifth, Mike Gilmartin hit an RBI single to centre that scored Brian Humphries from third base to make it 2-0.

With two outs in the sixth, Reggie Abercrombie lined a solo home run down the left field line to cut the RedHawks' lead in half.

After Kyle Anderson escaped a second and third, one-out jam in the top of the seventh, the Goldeyes went on to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. Maikol Gonzalez and Adam Heisler drew back-to-back walks to open the inning. Rohm followed with an RBI single to left. Fargo-Moorhead left-hander Will Mathis (2-4) worked his way through the rest of the inning to keep the scored tied at 2-2.

Mathis earned the win in relief. Winston Abreu (0-1) took the loss in relief for Winnipeg.

Edwin Carl started and took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in six and one-third innings. Carl walked two and matched a season-high 10 strikeouts. Carl fanned 10 on June 12th against the RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field.

Taylor Stanton started for the RedHawks and also took a no-decision. Stanton allowed two earned runs on five hits in seven-plus innings. Stanton walked four and struck out five.

Anderson worked one and two-thirds perfect innings in relief of Carl. Romanski reached base four times with two hits and two walks. Rohm had multiple hits for a third consecutive game. The Goldeyes pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts, matching a season-high accomplished two other times.

The four-game series continues Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Mikey O'Brien (10-4, 4.59) faces left-hander Will Solomon (5-2, 3.99).
