St. Paul Saints News Release
For the second time in less than a week the St. Paul Saints played an afternoon game they would like to forget. With a high noon start at CHS Field on Tuesday the Saints fell to the Wichita Wingnuts 11-1 in front of 8,553. It was the third straight loss in an afternoon contest and loss drops the Saints to 56-32 on the season. They will either have a 4.5 game lead or 3.5 game lead in the North pending the Winnipeg Goldeyes game at night.
Saints starter Corey Williams, throwing on three days rest, couldn't duplicate what he did in his first professional start. With one out in the first he walked Zach Cox and gave up back-to-back singles to Brent Clevlen and T.J. Mittelstaedt to load the bases. Williams walked Zane Chavez to force in a run, and with two outs, walked Richard Prigatano to make it 2-0.
In the third, with one on and two out, Prigatano walked for the second time in the game. Brent Dean and Leo Vargas provided back-to-back RBI singles giving the Wingnuts a 4-0 lead.
The Wingnuts blew it open in the fourth with a five run inning. Cox led off the inning by reaching on first baseman David Bergin's error. Clevlen doubled him to third and Mittelstaedt walked to load the bases. Chavez chased Williams with a two-run single to make it 6-0. Kody Knaus, who would wind up pitching the final 6.0 innings, gave up an RBI single to Nick Van Stratten to put the Wingnuts up 7-0. With one out and two on Knaus hit Dean and then walked Vargas to force in a run and make it 8-0. A sacrifice fly from Christian Stringer upped the lead to 9-0. Williams was charged with eight runs (five earned) in 3.0+ innings of work while walking five and striking out one. Knaus went 6.0 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking four and striking out three.
The Saints lone run came in the bottom of the seventh when Trever Adams hit a solo homer to left, his eighth of the season.
