RedHawks Avoid Sweep with Sunday Victory

WINNIPEG, MB - Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (38-41) starting pitcher Kevin McGovern (8-7) allowed two runs (both earned) in six innings as he helped the visitors to a 9-4 win at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon against the Winnipeg Goldeyes (34-46). The former Goldeye has 70 wins in his American Association career which extends his all-time mark. With the Goldeyes loss it snaps their four-game winning streak.
Fargo-Moorhead struck for a two-out run in the third inning when left fielder Scott Schreiber doubled to left-centre field making it 1-0. Center fielder Evan Alexander (9) led off the fourth inning with a homer making it 2-0. The RedHawks ballooned the lead to 5-0 in the sixth when right fielder Dillon Thomas (6) delivered a three-run homer to right. The first five RedHawks runs came against Winnipeg starter Luis Ramirez (5-7). In defeat, he allowed five runs (all earned) in 5 1/3 innings while issuing eight hits. The right-hander walked four and struck out four.
The Goldeyes made noise in the sixth when McGovern walked centre fielder Tra Holmes and hit designated hitter Dayson Croes with a pitch. Two batters later, right fielder Max Murphy doubled to right scoring Croes and Holmes making it 5-2 Fargo-Moorhead. In the seventh, Winnipeg trimmed it to a 5-3 RedHawks advantage on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Brynn Martinez.
The RedHawks got the lead back up to five runs scoring three in the eighth. The rally began on a two out walk issued to Schreiber by Goldeyes reliever Taylor Lepard. That extended the inning for third baseman Leobaldo Pina (14) who lifted a two-run homer to left and that made it 7-5 Fargo-Moorhead. It was Pina's second homer of the series and fourth against Winnipeg this year - all hit at Shaw Park. First baseman Manuel Boscan came after Pina and doubled while Alexander doubled home Boscan making it 8-4. Schreiber added a sacrifice fly in the ninth which closed the scoring.
The Goldeyes are back in action on Tuesday night in Sioux City for the start of a three-game series/seven-game road trip. Right-hander Joey Matulovich (4-8) is the scheduled starter for Winnipeg against Sioux City right-hander Heitor Tokar 3-2). First pitch is slated for 7:05.

Croes was 2-4 and has a nine-game hitting streak (17-35, .486). He's hit safely in 18-of-his-last-19 games. (31-74, .419)
Murphy's two RBIs are tied for the league lead with 74 along with Chris Herrmann of Kansas City.
McGovern is 3-0 this year against Winnipeg. Ramirez is 0-4 lifetime against Fargo-Moorhead in six starts.
Miles Simington entered the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh and finished two-for-two. He was 6-11 (.545) in the series with seven RBIs, Grand Slam and four runs scored.
