Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - The game that began Friday night and ended Saturday morning between the Omaha Royals and Memphis lasted 18 innings, before the Redbirds scored three runs in the final frame to take a 9-6 victory in front what was left of 4,525 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium. It was the longest game in terms of innings for the Royals since a 1990 playoff game at Nashville.
Royals center fielder David Lough led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run deep into the right field bleachers to tie the score at 6-6. Twelve scoreless innings followed, until Memphis batted around in the 18th inning and plated three runs off veteran reliever Matt Herges (0-1), who had tossed a perfect 17th inning. Redbirds lefty Tyler Norrick (1-1), who had taken the loss in Thursday's season opener, fired three shutout frames for the win.
The marathon contest, which took 5 hours and 22 minutes to complete, was the longest for Omaha since September 7, 1990, when the Royals needed 20 innings and 6:25 to win 8-7 at Nashville and take a 2-1 lead in the American Association Championship series. The Royals would eventually win that series 3-2 to capture their fourth and last league title in team history.
The Royals host Memphis in game three of the four-game series Saturday at 7:05 p.m.: Rich Hill of Memphis will face Omaha's Bruce Chen in a matchup of veteran southpaws.
Werner Enterprises Opening Weekend continues with a retro cap giveaway. Rosenblatt's gates open at 6:00 p.m. and the 1st 1,500 fans will receive a replica cap like those worn by the Omaha Royals players from 2002-2004. The night is also presented by 1620 the Zone, WOWT and The Reader.
