Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Memphis Redbirds (49-32) plated two in the first and kept the lead as they defeated the Iowa Cubs (29-50) 6-2, Friday at Principal Park.

Paul DeJong, on a rehab assignment with Memphis, got the offense going with a double. Alec Mills nearly got out of the inning unscathed, but walked Luke Voit and gave up a hit to Patrick Wisdom with two down to load the bases. A Carson Kelly single on a 1-0 pitched brought in two to put the Redbirds ahead.

Memphis played small ball to extend the lead to 3-0 in the second. Oscar Mercado got on with a hit by pitch to lead off. The centerfielder moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sac fly from Max Schrock.

Mark Zagunis scored Iowa's first run in the third. The outfielder got on via walk and later scored on a groundout from Victor Caratini.

The Redbirds doubled their run total in the seventh, getting RBI hits from Schrock, Wilfredo Tovar and Voit, to pad the lead.

Iowa rallied in the ninth as Taylor Davis reached on an error with one down. The runner would come back to bite the Redbirds as Lane Adams smoked a double off the wall and Wynton Bernard legged out an infield single to give Iowa its second run of the game. Memphis shut down the effort in time to snag the victory.

Mills fell to 3-8 on the season as he was tagged with the loss. Carl Edwards Jr. made his first rehab appearance for Iowa, lasting 0.2 innings and allowing one hit and one walk while fanning two.

Iowa and Memphis go head-to-head tomorrow at 7:08. Promotions include Pre-Game Catch on the Field. Fergie Jenkins and Andre Dawson will be signing autographs in the concourse to raise money for the Fergie Jenkins Foundation. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
