Redbirds rally late, top Royals

Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis used a four-run eighth inning to come back and beat Omaha 7-5 Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park.

The Redbirds led off the bottom of the eighth inning with three consecutive singles from Brian Barden, Nick Stavinoha and David Freese to load the bases. With Memphis trailing 5-3 Cody Haerther delivered a three-run double to put the Redbirds on top. Haerther, Stavinoha and Freese all finished the day with two hits each.

Mike Aviles led Omaha with two hits and two RBI. Ryan Shealy hit his third home run of the year in the top of the eighth inning to give Omaha a two-run lead. Dave Matranga gave the Royals an early lead driving in two runs with a triple in the second inning.

Cliff Politte earned the win in relief with 1.1 innings of work. The right-hander fanned two and allowed Shealy's home run. Chris Perez came on in the ninth and picked up his third save of the season with a 1-2-3 inning. Brandon Duckworth was pegged with the loss after giving up five runs, four earned, on five hits over four innings. Memphis starter Joe Rogers allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits before leaving in the fifth inning with an elbow injury.

Memphis will wrap up their first home series of the year tomorrow night against Omaha. Right-hander Mike Parisi will twirl for the 'Birds against Royals lefty Jorge De La Rosa. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
