Sky Sox and Rainiers Split Doubleheader, Jose Capellan Flirts With No-Hitter
April 13, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
Game 1
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox staked Greg Reynolds to multiple leads, but the youngster was unable to hold as the Sky Sox lost 11-7 to the Tacoma Rainiers in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Security Service Field.
Seth Smith's RBI triple in the third inning broke a 1-1 tie, and Sean Barker's double two batters later would make it a two-run game. But the young pitcher was unable to hold that lead, allowing three runs in the top of the fourth.
Bryan LaHair started the scoring with his first of two home runs in the game, a solo shot over the right field wall. An error by Ian Stewart on Rob Johnson's ground ball moments later would cost the Sky Sox a run when Matt Tuiasosopo hit a double to deep center field. Bronson Sardinha would cap the scoring with a single to center field.
The Sky Sox would fight back in the bottom half of the inning though. A Seth Smith single would tie the game, and Ian Stewart's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded would give the Sky Sox their third lead of the game.
Reynolds (0-1) again struggled with the lead, and LaHair's second home run of the game, a two-run shot, would give the Rainiers the lead for good.
Jake Woods (1-0) got the win for the Rainiers after pitching two innings and allowing just one hit.
Game 2
There has never been a no-hitter thrown at Security Service Field since the ballpark opened in June 1988. Jose Capellan did his best to break that streak in his first home appearance with the Sky Sox, but came up just short of making history. Still, the big right hander was able to lead the Sky Sox to a split of their double dip with the Rainiers, winning game two 6-1.
Capellan (1-0) took a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning, but Jeff Clement hit a leadoff home run that nearly took out the zero on the scoreboard that marked the Rainiers' hits. The fans at Security Service field gave Capellan a nice ovation as Clement rounded the bases, showing their appreciation for his effort. It was the closest the Sox have come to a no-hitter in their home park since Mo Sanford, Terry Wells and Keith Shepherd combined to pitch 8 2/3 innings of no-hit ball before Calgary's Brian Turang hit a two-strike single to break up the no-hit bid.
The Sky Sox hitters got to Tacoma starting pitcher Ryan Feierabend (2-1) early. Four consecutive hits by the Sox in the second inning staked their pitcher to a four-run lead. The cushion was more than enough for Capellan who was on top of his game Sunday afternoon.
Joe Koshanksky added a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, while Chris Frey finished the day 5-for-7 after going 3-for-3 in the second game.
