Memphis Redbirds News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Memphis Redbirds opened their 13-game road trip with a 7-1 victory over the division-rival Iowa Cubs at Principal Park on Monday night in the first game of a five-game series.
Memphis (63-69) has won three in a row and trails Omaha by two and a half games in the PCL American Northern Division with 12 games to play.
Five of Memphis' runs scored on a pair of home runs from third baseman Jermaine Curtis and first baseman Brock Peterson. Second baseman Vance Albitz added three of the team's dozen hits.
The Redbirds now have three homers in the last two games after going homerless over their previous seven contests.
Memphis took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Greg Garcia doubled to right, moved to third on a Curtis single, and scored on a Chris Swauger sacrifice fly.
The game became tied at 1-1 as Iowa cashed in an inning-opening walk by Brad Nelson. Two batters later, Luis Flores hit an RBI single to right to score Nelson.
The Redbirds plated four in the sixth inning and didn't look back. With two aboard, Curtis crushed a three-run home run over the left field wall, his fifth of the year. Jamie Romak and Greg Garcia both scored on the blast. Consecutive doubles by Swauger and Audry Perez gave the club it's next run in the inning.
In the next inning, Peterson crushed a two-run homer off of Iowa reliever Jeffry Antigua to conclude Memphis' scoring.
Scott McGregor (5-9) yielded one run on three hits in five innings for the victory, his first in his last six starts. Deryk Hooker and Jorge Rondon each hurled two scoreless innings in relief.
The two teams continue their series at 6:35 pm CT on Thursday night at Principal Park. Right-hander Boon Whiting (4-5, 4.52) will start for Redbirds and face right-hander Justin Grimm (2-3, 5.23).
