Memphis Redbirds News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Memphis Redbirds (22-19) lost 6-5 on a walk-off home run to the Tacoma Rainiers (26-18) in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium. Carlos Triunfel hit the game-winner off Jorge Rondon (1-5) with one out and nobody on in the bottom of the 9th inning.
The Redbirds split the series, 2-2. All four games were decided in the last at-bat. Even with the loss, the Redbirds remain in first place of the PCL American Northern Division.
Tacoma jumped on the board first with a homer off starter Maikel Cleto in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The solo shot by Rainiers' catcher Mike Zunino put the home team up 1-0.
Jermaine Curtis knocked in two and padded his team-RBI lead (26) with a bases-loaded single in the top of the 3rd inning to open the scoring for Memphis and give the Redbirds a 2-1 advantage. Two more runs would be added on a pair of fourth-inning RBI doubles by Rob Johnson and J.R. Towles to extend the lead to 4-1.
Cleto was touched up again with a home run in the 4th. Tacoma third-baseman Nate Tenbrink's two-run jack cut the Rainiers deficit to 4-3.
Brock Peterson got a run back and padded the Redbirds at 5-3 with a solo blast in front of cheering friends and family who were on hand to see the Washington-born first-baseman.
Peterson would be the last batter Tacoma starter James Paxton would face. Paxton gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts over 4.2 innings pitched.
Tacoma tied the game at 5-5 in the 6th. Cleto got chased after allowing a lead-off walk and hit. Eduardo Sanchez let both inherited runners score before recording an out. Cleto finished with five runs (all earned) on five hits (two home runs) with three walks and five strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched.
Redbirds' reliever Eric Fornataro pitched two innings of no-run, one hit ball, striking out one.
Rainiers' relievers Jonathan Arias and Brian Sweeney (5-1) threw four clean frames to finish the game.
Vance Albitz and Towles both extended their hitting streaks to four games. Peterson and Jamie Romak both went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
The Redbirds open a four-game series Monday night in Salt Lake. Right-hander Boone Whiting (1-0, 1.80) will be on the mound for Memphis against the Bees in a 7:35 p.m. CT start.
