Fresno Completes First Sweep of the Season, Beats New Orleans 4-2

Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno Grizzlies completed their first sweep of the season by beating the New Orleans Zephyrs 4-2 on Sunday at Chukchansi Park. The victory moves the Grizzlies' record to a season-high six games above .500 at 25-19. Fresno also took sole possession of first place in the Pacific Southern Division after the Sacramento River Cats lost on Sunday.
As has been the case for entire series, the Grizzlies pitching held the Zephyrs in check. Fresno starting pitcher Boof Bonser allowed both New Orleans runs over a season-high seven innings. It was Bonser's longest outing since July 27, 2010 with the Sacramento.
Bonser stranded a runner in scoring position in four of his seven innings pitched, including in three of his last four frames. Gary Brown and Francisco Peguero each provided a helping hand to Bonser by ending the second and third innings, respectively, with an outfield assist at home.
The Zephyrs scored in the third inning when pitcher Jacob Turner hit a one-out double and was later driven in by Bryan Petersen's double. Ben Lasater drove in Petersen to give the Zephyrs' a 2-1 lead, but on the same play, Peguero threw out Ed Lucas at the plate to end the threat.
The Grizzlies answered in the fourth inning when Juan Perez drove in Peguero with an RBI single. Perez later gave the Grizzlies the lead in the sixth with his second RBI single of the game and made it 3-2 Fresno.
Perez finished with two hits, giving him a multi-hit effort in each of his last fives games. Over the stretch, Perez is batting .600 (12-for-20) with six RBIs.
Peguero added some breathing room in the eighth with a solo home run. The roundtripper was not only Peguero's first at Chukchansi Park this season, but also extended the Grizzlies' streak of consecutive games with a home run to 10.
Roger Kieschnick went 2-for-4 with an RBI. He gave the Grizzlies' their first lead in the second inning with a run-scoring triple. It was Kieschnick's team-high sixth triple of the year.
Brett Pill had two hits and scored two runs. Pill has scored 10 runs in his last five games with Fresno. He also started at third base, his first start at third base since July 3, 2011 with the Grizzlies.
Ramon Ramirez and Sandy Rosario each threw a scoreless inning of relief for Fresno. Rosario picked up the save, his second in the series and third on the season.
The Grizzlies pitching staff has a 1.97 ERA over the last seven games.
Turner took the loss for New Orleans after allowing three runs (two earned) over seven innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
The Grizzlies will start a four-game series against the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Monday for a 7:05 pm contest. The Grizzlies have not announced their starter while the RedHawks will send Asher Wojciechowski to the mound.
