Memphis Redbirds News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Memphis Redbirds rode a six-run first inning for a 7-3 win over the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Saturday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in the second game of a season-ending four-game series.
The Redbirds have now won three in a row and nine of their last 13 games.
Combined with Omaha's extra-inning defeat, Memphis (69-73) moves into sole possession of first place in the PCL American Northern Division with two games remaining to play in the regular season. Memphis won the season series over Omaha and owns the tiebreaker.
The Redbirds sent 11 to the plate during a six-run rally in the top of the first inning against Oklahoma City starter David Martinez (0-2), who threw 44 pitches to get through the frame. The first four batters of the game reached, beginning with singles by outfielder Mike O'Neill and shortstop Ryan Jackson. First baseman Brock Peterson then ripped an RBI double down the left field line, followed by a two-run single from outfielder Jamie Romak.
After the first out was recorded, second baseman Greg Garcia tattooed a two-run home run homer into a tiki hut overlooking the Redbirds bullpen in right field, his third of the season. Catcher Audry Perez ended the scoring with a slow-rolling RBI single to right field, scoring Jermaine Curtis.
Oklahoma City answered in the bottom of the first as Jimmy Paredes led off with a triple and later scored on a George Springer sacrifice fly.
The RedHawks added two more runs in the third to cut the Redbirds' lead in half at 6-3. Che-Hsuan led off the inning with his third homer of the season to give the club its second run, a line drive solo homer over the left field wall. Brandon Laird's bases-loaded sacrifice fly was the club's other run.
Chad Huffman's 13th home run of the season concluded Memphis' scoring. His solo shot in the eighth inning traveled over the left field wall.
Memphis starter Scott McGregor (6-10) gave up three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in six innings for the win. Deryk Hooker worked two scoreless in relief before Nick Greenwood fired a perfect ninth frame.
The Redbirds and RedHawks continue their series at 6:05 pm CT on Sunday evening at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Memphis will send right-hander Boone Whiting to the mound. Oklahoma City has yet to announce a starter.
